FYR Cycene Ond Drinc: Singapore Restaurant Review

Relaxed European-Asian cuisine with stiff drinks and live music.

FYR Cycene Ond Drinc - exterior

FYR Cycene Ond Drinc, or ‘FYR’ for short, has only been open over on Boon Tat Street for six months, but already they have come out with 17 new additions to their original menu. Many of their plates are very meat-centric and Western in principal (steaks, lobster, mashed potatoes, etc.), but FYR makes an extra effort to include a touch of local flare and spice to appease all different kinds of lunch and dinner guests.

The mantra at FYR Cycene Ond Drinc is, ‘modern European grills enlivened by Southeast Asian spices.’ They also have a heavy focus on the aspect of fire – the most primitive and prime element of cooking over at FYR. The restaurant proudly utilizes a Josper Charcoal Oven to prepare all of its signature meat dishes.

FYR Cycene Ond - interior

The interior of the modest-size space has an overall rugged vibe with wooden barrel accents and red vintage chandeliers, with pops bright and modern touches such as the graffiti-like art work that dominates the walls.

If you are looking for something more low key, there is a handful of high top tables out on the front sidewalk, perfect for sharing a beer bucket and relaxing after work.

Now, on to the food…

FYR Cycene Ond Drinc - Blue Mussels

Blue Mussles ($15.00)

We kicked off the meal with a skillet of mussels of sharing. The dish is made with a mixed herb wasabi broth and piled high with laksa leaves. The highlight of the dish (as with most mussel dishes, at least in my opinion) was the side of fried buns used for mopping up the savory broth.

FYR Cycene Ond Drinc - Chilean Sea Bass

Chilean Sea Bass ($18.00)

Next, we sampled a small portion of the sea bass. This dish is accompanied with a crispy slice of prosciutto, bits of chopped squid and a fruit salsa that utilizes local and seasonal selections such as guava, carrots and apple. The flaky fish sits in a rojak sauce, giving the dish a slightly Asian touch. Although small in size, I enjoyed the taste and flavor of the fish.

FYR Cycene Ond Drinc - Angus Tomahawk

Cape Bryon 100 Day Grass-Fed Angus Porterhouse 500g ($62)

As a smaller option to their 1kg(!) 100 day grass fed Angus Tomahawk, which goes for a cool $108 (pictured above), we sampled the smaller porterhouse cut of beef. The beef was a little tough, but the size was nice for sharing and I enjoyed the crust of various spices on top.

All of the mains at FYR are served with house salad with a ginger soy vinaigrette dressing.

FYR Cycene Ond Drinc - Lobster, Chicken, Lamb

Whole Main Lobster, Five Spice Whole Chicken & Lamb Saddle ($88)

In what is likely the tastiest and best value for money option on the menu, we sampled the lobster, chicken and lamb trio. This is definitely a dish for sharing. You can even choose your lobster to be either steamed or grilled, depending on your mood.

Now I am usually a red meat kind of gal, but the whole chicken was surprisingly the my favorite item on the platter. The meat was extremely juicy and tender and easily came off the bones.

Valrhona Triple Chocolate Mousse ($12.00)

Never one to pass on dessert, we sampled two items – the chocolate mousse and a banana and caramel dish. The chocolate mouse was good and all, but the chocolate cookie crumble ‘soil’ on the bottom was the real hit.

Grilled Lady Finger Bananas & Coconut Ice Cream: almond caramel, filo pastry, cinnamon ($10.00)

I was less of a fan of the grilled lady finger banana dish. I found the grilled flavor to be too overpowering and bitter. The coconut ice cream also had a strange, whip cream-like texture when I was looking for a more classic and refreshing ice cream taste to accompany the rich caramel.

FYR Cycene Ond - live music

Note, while you are enjoying your dinner or dessert, FYR Cycene Ond Drinc plays host to a live band every Monday and Tuesday (8pm-11pm) and Saturday (8:30pm-11:30pm).

FYR Cycene Ond - interior

Overall, I thought the food at FYR Cycene Ond Drinc was good, but not great – a nice experience, but nothing outstanding or memorable. I would return for a relaxing drink outside, small bite and to enjoy the live music, but I likely wouldn’t spend my coveted Saturday night reservation here.
