10 Holland Village Cafes below $15 in Singapore

holland Village cafes below 15 in Singapore

I see a lot of cafe listicles on Tiong Bahru but am very surprised not many people know about Holland V as a cafe hub – much less one where you can cafe-hop rather cheaply. That is, if you know how to choose wisely. All the cafes here are only ten minutes from the Holland Village MRT.

Whether you are here just to cafe-hop, catch up with old friends or try the latest dessert fad, there is something for everyone at Holland V. I think Clean Bandit said it best that there is no place I would rather be. In this article, I’ll show you where, when and how to dine on a budget below $15 in this little cafe hub in Singapore not many know about.

1. Sunday Folks

holland V cafes below $15 Sunday folk holland V cafes below $15 singapore sunday folk waffles

Out of the 6 different types of soft-serve available, I recommend the Pistachio and Sea salt Gula Melaka. Pistachio has a very earthy taste that is difficult to replicate and match – something I find Sunday folks does amazing well. The Sea salt Gula Melaka is a signature from Creamier (which they also own) they have carried over, tasting just as good as a soft serve. It has the right hint of sea salt to balance out the Gula Melaka, no place does Salted ice cream better than Creamier/Sunday Folk.

Lighter flavors like these tend to go better with the waffles – which go at only $12.80 for a double stack. I like Sunday also because of the good array of condiments they have – Royce Nama chocolates, Pecans, Caramelized popcorn etc. I’m not too big a fan of their regular cones though. At a steeply priced $7.20 its really too much for pretentiously decorated ice cream.

2. Project Acai

The first of its kind in Singapore. Acai berry bowls ($13.50 for a large bowl, $9.50 for a Medium bowl pictured here) are touted as the new super health food from Brazil. Something, I personally am a bit skeptical about.

Taste-wise, I am obsessed with the unique earthy taste of the Acai Mash ($6.80/ $9.30/ $13.50) from Project Acai. It has a faint aftertaste of the Acai seed. Somewhat similar to a dragon-fruit but finer and less bitter. What I like best is the refreshing, clean organic aftertaste it leaves on the palate with just a hint of sweetness that keeps you craving for more.

Atop the Acai mash is a layer of Granola,  decorated with a variety of fruits; berries, grapes, bananas and strawberries and topped off with a toss of coconut and mango bits. The mash interacts with the different fruits to give a different series of tastes. You absolutely have to try this for yourself.

3. Hatched

Holland Village Cafes below $15 Singapore brunch eggs benedict hatch  Holland V Cafes below $15 Singapore Hatched

The pioneers of Egg’s Benedict. This was the go-to place for Eggs Ben’s before the trend caught on in 2013. And yes, what else but the Egg’s Benedict to have here.  ($12 for a serving of one)

One thing I dislike here though is how they sometimes pre-poach the eggs. Hence some parts of the eggs are cold when served cold.  However it’s only an occasional hiccup. The eggs benedict has a very pleasant tuna mash served on the side, just the right ratio of mayo with creamy potato mash to taste. This for me is really the best part about the dish.

Cafes like these continually try to reinvent themselves to stay relevant. Releasing seasonal items like their Christmas bacon cheese cupcakes and salted egg cheesecake for Christmas. They only do it for the major holidays though, I do wish they pushed out more menu items all year round.

4. Plain Vanilla

Sadly, this is the one café on the list that does not have any seating area. Plain vanilla is the hallmark of what a good cupcake is all about.

I shrivel in joy whenever I have any of their cupcakes ($3.90 for one, 6 for $22). Their Salted Caramel cupcake is the absolute best. Rich shots of Caramel stinging with the right hit of salt atop a moist buttery cupcake base. Admittedly, a bit pricey for a cupcake – I dare say though you have not tasted a good cupcake until you have tried Plain Vanilla.

If you prefer something less sweet; Opt for the Vanilla or Carrot cake. Though I must warn you they can still come off rather sweet, so this one is only for those with a sweet tooth. Even for me, I always try to have a cup of tea/coffee with their cupcakes. A little tip, try to head here before 5pm on weekends. They may close at 5pm but they always sell out before that.

5. Haakon Superfoods and Juice

Haakon

Haakon is a Scandinavian cafe offering healthy meal options. The cafe has a range of nourishing and nutritious food to choose from, such as smoothies (from $5.90), superfood bowls (from $7.90) as well as salad bowls (from $10.90).

Every superbowl is served with Haakon’s very own freshly made chia parfait and granola. Haakon’s Classic Acai Bowl ($7.90 for a Medium bowl , $12.90 for a Large bowl) is loaded with organic acai blend, topped with coconut flakes, banana, strawberries and blueberries. The superbowl is enriched with antioxidants, aids in wellness boosting and replenishes energy. This is perfect as a healthy dessert at anytime of the day.

6. The Daily Scoop

To be honest there is nothing absurdly amazing about the Daily Scoop. They have a pretty interesting array of ice cream flavors, Durian, Avocado, Salted Brownie. Nothing that happens to particularly impress me. The prices here though are what really deserve a shoutout – one waffle/brownie with a scoop of ice cream goes at only $6.20, way below the average price of a waffle at other cafes.

That is a pretty good deal for the kind of ambience and food you are paying for. Its not that the food is bad, its just that you cannot really go wrong with something like a brownie/waffle with ice cream.  The Daily scoop is the kind of place to be to chill your afternoons away catching up with old friends.

7. D’Good Café

Ah, people love to come here to take photos of the pretty garden layout on the second level. If you want to opt for something sweeter, I recommend the Cornflake Waffle with Bananas ($12). A wallop of cream cheese with bananas and cornflakes for their extra crunch.

The Eggs Benedict ($13.50) are pretty good here too. A notch better than their next door neighbor, my only nitpick would be the rocket leaves that always come off a tad bit too bitter. I would recommend coming here to celebrate someone’s birthday. They serve a 3 foot tall smoothie for the birthday person if it’s their actual day. Just let the staff know!

8. La Nonna

Holland Village Cafes below $15 in Singapore la nonna 24
A little Italian hideout in the corner of Holland Village. A place like this would usually come off too expensive for an article like this but there is a 1-1 promotion for the mains on weekdays which sets the usual $25++ for only $13 per pax. If you happen to dine in odd numbers (or alone), there is also a separate 40% discount during weekday lunches. I would rather go for the 1-1 and take the second main away for takeaways.

I love the Nera – a squid ink pizza base with a generous serving of fresh scallops, calamari, prawns with a toss of mozzarella drizzle. If you want to see how much better the pizzas here are compared to a more popular franchise like Skinny pizzas just order the Proscuitto E Ruloclamunch (pictured on the left) and you will see how much better they do it here. Their pastas are pretty decent. A generous serving of cheese, meat and everything in between. However, the choices definitely aren’t as exciting as the pizzas.

9. PARK at Holland Village

PARK features its al fresco dining and offers a wide selection of dishes to choose from. Its menu may lie a little over $15 but its two truffle dishes, below $15, are worth trying.

Park

PARK boasts its Truffled Mac and Cheese ($13.50). The dish is infused with a very strong truffle taste and has a really creamy texture. Another dish to try would be the Truffle Fries ($11), served in a generous portion with just the right amount of truffle oil tossed in it.

 10. Gastronomia Da Paolo

holland village cafes below $15 gastronomia da paolo cronut Crodo

Another gem at Chip bee gardens. Gastronomia is acclaimed for their array of desserts cling wrapped desserts like Nutella cake, pastas and salads. However, the one niche they have here that triumphs the typical cafe are the cronuts.

At $4.90, it comes in three different versions with original, chocolate or salted caramel . A flaky croissant texture with a chewy doughnut batter topped off with a glaze (caramel/chocolate) of your choice – what is there not to like? This is something every foodie needs to have off their eating-bucket-list. I’m surprised this popular dessert in the US has not caught on here really.
