Best milkshake guide to Singapore

Milkshakes! Those creamy, dreamy concoctions that are the equivalent of bliss in a glass. From that thrilling anticipation as you try to get your first sip to climb all the way up the straw to the final throttling sounds as you scrape the bottom, milkshakes rarely disappoint. Finding the best milkshake is a bit more complicated.

We scoured the island on this most delicious of quests, tasting every milkshake we could get our lips on, from the generic fast-food versions to the overindulgent artisanal ones. We finally narrowed it down to the 9 best milkshakes in Singapore at the cost of our six-packs. (Well, that’s my excuse anyway).

So, grab a straw, get ready to indulge, and let’s dive into the world of Singapore’s finest milkshakes!

1. Black Tap

Black Tap Singapore 12

Black Tap is almost always the first name that comes to mind when you think ‘milkshake’.

Their Classic Shakes (S$12) come in Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Caramel, Nutella, Peanut Butter and Oreo Cookies & Cream flavours. You may think that this is a heck of a range in itself but it’s not even half the story.

Black Tap really comes into its own with its CrazyShakes. ‘Crazy’ just about covers it – these aren’t conventional by a long shot! The most affordable is the Brooklyn Blackout (S$21), a chocolate shake that comes in a chocolate frosted rim accompanied by mini chocolate chips topped with a chocolate brownie, whipped cream & chocolate drizzle.

If you have the wallet and appetite, the most expensive is the brazenly audacious Vegan Black ‘N White Cakeshake (S$25). If you didn’t already know, a ‘Cakeshake’ is a milkshake topped with a literal slice of cake, and a huge one at that!

2. Five Guys

Best Milkshake Five Guys 1

Five Guys is a New York sensation that’s apparently Spider-man certified. Well, for its burgers, at least. I have my doubts about the tastes of comic book writers after Captain Marvel and She-Hulk but I can vouch for their milkshakes!

The Five Guys Shake (S$11) comes in 7 different flavours: Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel, Strawberry, Banana, Oreo Cookie Pieces and Lotus Biscoff Cookie Crumble. They even let you combine as many of the different flavours in one. Even better, you get to add bacon to any shake! Whipped cream comes free, too.

Our office descended into heated debate over which combo is the best but Peanut Butter & Banana and Chocolate & Banana seemed to win out. Bacon was a go, too. The only way to discover what combo works for you is to try them all, I suppose. Happy ‘shaking.

3. Shake Shack

Very appropriately named for this listicle, Shake Shack actually began as a hot dog stand in Madison Square Park, NY. That was over 20 years ago and they are living up to the name with one of the best and widest array of milkshake options anywhere in Singapore.

Their Classic Shakes (S$7.60) described as “hand spun every time” are available in Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Black & White, Salted Caramel and Common Man Coffee. You can add Malt to your choice for just S$1.

They even have a Singapore Exclusive of Pandan Shake (S$8.60). It’s vanilla custard blended with pandan and coconut, with the whole delectable concoction topped with gula melaka crumble.

Apart from this vast range, Shake Shack also conjures up Featured Shakes (S$9.10). These are seasonal flavours available only for a limited time and continually being succeeded by new ones.

4. OverEasy

Best Milkshake - OverEasy

OverEasy bills itself as the “ultimate American diner in Singapore”. And when you claim that pedestal, you have to have an excellent selection of milkshakes on your menu. Fortunately, OverEasy does live up to that reputation, easily earning itself a spot on our list.

The talking doesn’t stop there, oh no. Their milkshake range is called Our Famous Milkshakes. These well-known milkshakes come in 5 different flavours: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, M&Ms and Oreo. Each one costs S$14.

You can add a shot of Espresso (S$1.50) to your milkshake as well but for some reason, only if you order the Vanilla.

5. Swensen’s

Best Milkshake - Swensen's

Ahhhh, the taste of childhood! Most of us remember our most indulgent milkshakes from when we were kids as being from Swensen’s. Some things never change and the Swensen’s commitment to creating great milkshakes (and great childhood memories for new generations of kids) continues.

While they have just 2 different shakes on their menu, neither is to be sneezed at. The basic Milk Shake (S$6.45) at Swensen’s is a thick and creamy affair, made all the richer and more enticing with the addition of their speciality Swensen’s ice cream.

The Malted Milk Shake (S$6.45) is virtually the same thing, with the only difference being the addition of a dose of malt powder.

There is technically a third variety, too: the Milk Shake Float. It’s simply the basic Milk Shake topped with a scoop of Swensen’s ice cream of your choice. Hey, I’m in!

6. McDonald’s

Best Milkshake - McDonald's

Ahhhh, the taste of childhood, part 2! The odds are that your very first milkshake was at McDonald’s; I know it was mine. While one of the most affordable, the Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry options are quite tasty.

I especially love the very tiny bits of ice that give the McDonald’s shakes their coarse, grainy texture. Of all the milkshake vendors on our list, this is the place that achieves the perfect balance of thickness and viscosity. However, it doesn’t make it higher up the list as others have a richer flavour.

The other problem is that McDonald’s shakes are not available at every branch, only specific ones that have a dessert kiosk. Sometimes, not even those! Then, there is the frequent breakdowns. The problem is so egregious in the United States that there is actually a website dedicated to tracking the faulty machines in the US, UK and Germany.

7. Joji’s Diner

Joji’s Diner is a Japanese-American diner and we all know that if anyone is going to copy the Americans well, it’s the Japanese. The place goes all out with the American diner theme, complete with the classic bright red colour scheme we associate with them.

There are just 3 milkshakes on the Joji’s Diner menu but what the lack in variety, they more than make up for in quality and flavour.

The Big Bang (S$12.90) is their chocolate milkshake in all its ooey-gooey glory. Fair-haired Goldilocks (S$11.90) has Salted Caramel as its flavour and does more than a fair job of it. Clearly named, the Strawberry Paddlepop (S$9.90) is for the lovers of strawberry flavour and all things pink.

8. Citrus by the Pool

Huh? Who by the what? That was our collective reaction when we first came across halal cafe Citrus by the Pool in our quest to find the best milkshake spots in Singapore. But we were quite impressed when we set our eyes on their multicoloured collection.

There are 2 different sizes – Mini Milkshakes (S$9.90) and Mighty Milkshakes (S$12.50). In a step away from what you would expect to see, the 2 are completely different – the flavours you get in one aren’t available in the other. Each of the 10 creations has a different topping.

The Mini range is crowned with a scoop of ice cream. The flavours include the pink Berry Sweet topped with marshmallows, Salted Caramel pierced with a Lotus Biscoff biscuit, and Cookie Top that’s topped off with an Oreo cookie.

From the Mighty range, I like the Double Chocolate and its 2 Picola sticks, Strawberry Gem and its armour of Gem biscuits, and Caramel Popcorn that is… umm… topped with caramel popcorn.

9. Crafted Singapore

What? Another NYC-inspired restaurant that does milkshakes? Yes, but Crafted by Peter Zweiner does it in a much more polished and upscale fashion. It takes a more socially and environmentally responsible path, too, bringing its menu to you in a farm-to-table concept.

My pick of their 5 milkshakes is the An Apple A Day (S$18). I’m pretty sure I won’t be keeping the doctor away if I have one of these every single day but they are absolutely divine! Made of homemade apple butter and raisins, they just go down so smooth!

Also popular among customers is Mad About Mentha (S$16) that’s a concoction of chocolate and mint. Impecanable (S$20) combines chocolate and caramel but it’s the infusion of pecan nuts that really makes it stellar choice. Million Dollar Smile (S$16) of caramel and Biscoff and Smooth Criminal (S$20) of chocolate and clarified butter round it up.

Oh yeah, you can even get an Alcohol Supplement (S$10) of 30ml with a choice of bourbon, whisky, gin, vodka, rum or Bailey’s.
