When foreigners look at Singapore, they likely see our skyscrapers and grand hotels first. But beneath all that is a country that’s still holding on to a lot of nostalgia and tradition. A good chunk of proof lies in our food, with old-school stalls like Chang Ji Gourmet @ Chinatown Complex still serving up their menu the traditional way.

Even better is that everything on the menu is priced at S$1.30!

The stall has been around for about 50 years and is currently being run by second-generation hawkers – two sisters and their brother. They’re in their late 50s and began helping out when they were still kids. Some regulars today have grown up on their food.

I started with their Fish and Peanut Porridge (S$1.30). It is infused with bonito-based (柴鱼) broth and has a handful of soft peanuts in every serving. The consistency is not that of thick congee but more watery, which makes it easier and lighter to consume.

Many regulars say that the you tiao from stalls available in the same food centre are a perfect addition.

If you’re more of a noodle person, perhaps the Economical Bee Hoon (S$1.30) or Economical Fried Mee (S$1.30) is more your speed. Here, the fried bee hoon is more on the savoury side. The dish is served simply with some bean sprouts, and diners are free to add some chilli to the side. Chang Ji Gourmet uses light soya sauce for the seasoning.

Regulars assure newcomers that although the elderly owners managing the stall may come off as rather fierce, it’s not with any ill intent. Queues at their stall are always long and they want to ensure everyone gets their order so they may come off as snappy. Considering their age, please give them some grace and understanding.
