Yu sheng or lo hei is a Chinese New Year highlight which I look forward to every year. You get the opportunity to toss various colourful ingredients together as high as you can for prosperity and good fortune (shouting good wishes in the process). The end result: an artfully-messy platter of goodness!
Gone are the days when only raw fish was used for this exquisite salad dish. Yu sheng has evolved to utilise other kinds of seafood and even cooked fish.
To usher in the Lunar New Year festivities without breaking a sweat, I’ve compiled this food guide for you to toss to a prosperous 2023 with the 10 best yu sheng in Singapore. May all of you receive lots of blessings and good luck! Huat ah!
1. Paradise Group

For a year abundant with prosperity and growth, order the Prosperity Yu Sheng (S$68). It comes with smoked salmon, fresh shredded vegetables and fruity yuzu chia seed dressing that is not only refreshing but also healthy and nutritious.

3. Chopsuey Cafe
Situated within the calm surroundings of Dempsey Hill, Chopsuey Cafe has concocted a plethora of heartwarming dishes featuring contemporary Anglo-Chinese and Southeast Asian influences.
To usher in the year of the rabbit, the wholesome Chopsuey Lucky Lunar ‘Lo Hei‘ puts a deliciously healthy spin on the traditional. It features a delectable symphony of flavours such as trout, kale, celeriac, sprouts, red radish, blueberries and wild rice, all topped with real gold leaf— super fancy ingredients indeed!

elemen 元素 is a modern dining concept based around healthy and responsible vegetarian living. The restaurant’s food is designed to nurture the health of customers through the use of natural ingredients and wholesome meatless recipes.
This Chinese New Year 2023, leap into the year of the rabbit as they offer a glorious spread of wholesome meatless classics from 5 Jan to 5 Feb 2023— that’s music to the ears for vegetarians!
The Prosperity Truffle Yu Sheng (S$48.80++ for 5 pax) is a vegetarian rendition of the Lunar New Year classic and all-time favourite. It’s made with premium ingredients, including Japanese konnyaku, purple cabbage and, most importantly, truffle slices.

7. YUN NANS

8. White Restaurant
Fondly known as “The Original Sembawang White Beehoon” restaurant, White Restaurant is all set for the Lunar New Year festivities with its auspicious set menu available at its 7 restaurants island-wide.
Kickstart your feast by tossing up to a year of great fortune with the Grand Fortune Abalone Yusheng (S$49.90 for small, S$66.80 for large).
Luscious 18-head abalones are combined with shredded carrot, winter melon, dried persimmon, jellyfish and buckwheat. For an added crispy texture, this specially-curated yusheng comes with deep-fried shredded yam topped with ground peanuts, pomelo, lemon leaf and white sesame. The specially-concocted piquant yuzu sauce gives the dish a fruity finish.

10. Orchid Live Seafood
Orchid Live Seafood has been well-known for true blue Teochew-style live seafood since 1999. For the first time, they are launching a Chinese New Year set menu with all-new items made for joy, luck and prosperity.
Alongside these set menus, there are a few accompanying yu sheng platters to toss to an auspicious new year.
Besides the Abalone (S$68) and the luxurious Southern Austalian Lobster Sashimi (S$198), they also have Geoduck Sashimi (S$88). The texture of the geoduck is crispier than a clam or abalone, and its taste is clear and sweet.
All these options are mixed with fresh ingredients to toss to good luck and greater health this new year.
