If I find myself at a coffee shop unsure of what to order, I always look for fishball noodles, particularly the dry version. It’s a fail-safe choice that rarely disappoints. Recently, I stumbled upon a video featuring Kedai Makanan Loke Yew Road Fish Ball Noodle at Taman Midah, and its glowing reviews immediately ignited my curiosity.

Another MRT adventure led me to this eatery. In a brisk 7-minute walk from MRT Taman Midah, I found myself at the doorstep of Kedai Makanan Loke Yew Road Fish Ball Noodle. This shop, now run by the third generation, remains a beloved local haunt.

The eatery, nestled next to the bustling street, has an unassuming facade seamlessly integrating with the vibrant atmosphere of its surroundings. Meanwhile, there are ample seats for dining inside, and because I visited during non-peak hours, it wasn’t too crowded.

What I tried at Kedai Makanan Loke Yew Road Fish Ball Noodle

Seated and ready, I wasted no time in ordering a bowl of Fishball Noodle (RM9.50 for small). The menu offered an impressive selection of 8 noodles to choose from, including kuey teow, bee hoon, yellow mee, glass noodle, lou shu fun, handmade noodles, mi xian or yee mee. Without hesitation, I went for my favourite combination— dry yellow mee.

The yellow noodle was adorned with crispy fried pork lard, 2 pieces of fish cake, and some spring onions.

The noodles were so evenly coated with sauce that I hardly needed to toss them. Cooked to perfection with an al dente texture, they offered a delightful savoury taste. However, a subtle alkaline taste somewhat diminished the overall enjoyment.

Kedai Makanan Loke Yew Road Fish Ball Noodle - Soup

The fish balls were served separately from the noodles— there were 4 fish balls and 1 fish dumpling immersed in a clear broth topped with a generous amount of spring onions. The soup was clear and non-greasy, but it carried a pronounced peppery kick.

The fish ball wasn’t the typical smooth texture; it had a rough surface with an ideal bouncy texture that wasn’t overly firm like those factory-made fish balls. I found a lot of handmade traces in it. Furthermore, the fish ball exuded a delightful aroma of fresh seafood, tantalising the senses with its savoury essence.

The fish dumpling is also a highlight of their menu. The impeccably seasoned minced meat was carefully encased in a firm and slightly chewy outer skin. The skin was skilfully crafted to retain its texture during cooking— it offered a satisfying contrast to the juicy filling it enveloped.

All in all, my dining experience at Kedai Makanan Loke Yew Road Fish Ball Noodle was enjoyable, although I regret not opting for the handmade noodles. It’s still a fulfilling option whenever I crave for fishball noodles.

I can see myself revisiting this shop to indulge in the fish balls, and to sample their handmade noodles as well. For those driving here, be aware that parking availability is quite limited.
