Jalan Besar is home to an abundance of upcoming F&B eateries, and here we have the new kid on the block, La Levain—opening on 11 December 2021. The area—home to many cafes—is now home to a new bakery-cafe helmed by ex-pastry chef of Keong Saik Bakery and Bakery Brera.
Here’s a little background of the bakery: levain is a leavening agent used to bake bread, and is used as a starter of bread-making, which makes up the fundamental principle at La Levain. The 30-seater minimalistic cafe is decked out in an industrial-like grey interior paired with rustic-like wooden furniture, and neon orange lighting. The bakery also offers more, like brunch, pastries and specially curated coffee.
Do expect to find a huge selection of more than 50 pastries and bakes on display at their counter, you can look forward to Bread (from S$4), Viennoiserie (from S$3.50), Cruffin (from S$4.60), Baked Sandwich (from S$5.50), Muffin (from S$2.50), and Whole Pies (from S$32).
If you, like me, have problems with deciding on just one item, you can opt for the Le Levain Classics Box (S$32.80 for six items) that’ll consist of French Butter Croissant, Pain Au Chocolat, Brown Sugar Kouign Amann with Himalayan Sea Salt, Hōjicha Mochi Croissant, Speculoos Cruffin, and Burnt Cheese Croissant.
Or you can get the La Levain Signatures Box (S$38 for eight items), that’ll come with the addition of Bo Bo Cha Cha Croissant, Pain Au Chocolat, Kouign Amann, Banana Danish, Mushroom Onion with Gruyere Cheese Danish, Four Cheeses and Ham Croissant, Pistachio Salted Caramel Cruffin, and English Cranberry and Raisin Scone.
Their signature viennoiseries will include Kouign Amann (S$4.50), Pain Au Chocolat ($4.50), Burnt Cheese Croissant (S$7), the special Bo Bo Cha Cha Croissant (S$6.50), Hōjicha Mochi Croissant ($6.80), and the Insta-famous Cruffin (from S$4.60). The Cruffins, a cross between croissant and muffin, will come in various flavours like Citrus (S$4.60), Speculoos (S$5.20), Pistachio (S$4.80), “Ferrero Rocher” Nutella (S$4.80), and Matcha (S$4.80).
