Mother’s House Myanmar Cuisine: Authentic Burmese perfect for a first try

I was doing my regular social media scroll on the hunt for places to eat when Mother’s House Myanmar Cuisine caught my eye.

I must admit that I haven’t been the most adventurous foodie. The prospect of my first foray into Burmese cuisine was intriguing because I’d only ever been acquainted with the more popular Southeast Asian cuisines of Thailand and Vietnam.

Mother's House Myanmar Cuisine - Storefront

Mother’s House Myanmar Cuisine is located in Yak Hong Kopitiam at Woodlands Bizhub. Despite its rather ulu location in the industrial area of Woodlands North, the coffeeshop is in close proximity to a bus stop with connecting buses to nearby MRT stations.

The orange signboards display tantalising pictures of the dishes and their names, although they don’t sport price tags – you’ll have to ask.

Helmed by several Burmese ladies and a man, the stall serves a variety of Burmese noodles and mixed rice, with its dishes stored neatly in metal containers at the counter. Noticing that most patrons ordered noodles, I followed suit.

What I tried at Mother’s House Myanmar Cuisine

Mother's House Myanmar Cuisine - Coconut Noodle

The first dish I tried was the Coconut Noodle (S$6), labelled ‘Yangon style laksa’ on the menu. The bowl of noodles had a light yellow broth with specks of red oil, looking almost similar to our beloved laksa

However, instead of the usual tau pok and beansprouts, this was topped with chicken shreds, bits of yellow rice crackers and fried chickpea fritters.

Appearance aside, the broth virtually shared no other similarities with laksa. It was thick and creamy, with a predominant coconut milk flavour. It leaned towards the sweet side and did not have a hint of spice either.

While it was rich, it thankfully wasn’t surfeiting. I had spoonful after spoonful.

The yellow noodles were unfortunately soggy by the time I had begun to dig in. While I didn’t really mind, bouncier noodles would definitely have been better.

Of the plentiful ingredients, I particularly enjoyed the chickpea fritters, reminiscent of the spiced chickpeas in packets of mixed nuts. These delightful pieces retained a surprising crunch despite having been submerged in the broth.

If you’re one to get jelak easily, I’d recommend mixing in the slices of purple onion and chilli flakes given on the side. The onions provided a savoury balance to the sweetness of the dish, while the chilli flakes lent a much-needed spicy kick.

Mother's House Myanmar Cuisine - Garlic Oil Noodles

The next dish that piqued my interest was the Garlic Oil Noodles (S$6). I was drawn to its simplicity – you can’t go wrong with garlic.

I immediately caught a heavenly whiff of garlic when I received the bowl. Browned garlic pieces adorned the heap of chicken breast pieces atop a bed of noodles, with a pop of colour from the green spring onions.

At first glance, it reminded me of a bowl of Taiwanese scallion oil chicken rice.

I was surprised to see that the noodles used were in fact linguine pasta, cooked to a perfect al dente.

I had my first forkful of twisted noodles glistening in garlic oil. It was delightfully moreish, with the aromatic garlic oil and tasty fried garlic bits. A true garlic lover’s fantasy.

If I were to be entirely honest, I wouldn’t be able to tell you the difference between these Garlic Oil Noodles and a traditional aglio olio. Perhaps it’s how both dishes star garlic and oil.

The serving of chicken breast pieces that accompanied the noodles was generous, to say the least. However, I did find them a tad bland and dry.

For a dish with garlic as the predominant flavour profile, I believe it’d do well with some marinated chicken thigh as a topping instead.

Mother's House Myanmar Cuisine - Warm Tofu with Rice Noodle

The final dish I got at Mother’s House was the Warm Tofu with Rice Noodle (S$6). It stood out to me in the sense that it’s unlike any dish from other cuisines, as opposed to the previous 2 dishes. As I was most excited for this, I was sure to save it for last.

The rice noodles are covered by a layer of warm, yellow tofu. It’s garnished with some minced meat in a red chilli paste, spring onion, fried bits of shallots and garlic, and a spoonful of peanuts.

I began by giving the tofu layer a taste. It was viscous and smooth like a thick puree, bearing quite a plain taste on its own.

I gave the noodles a good toss, the copious amount of tofu and sauce thickening the dish as a whole.

The spice lover that I am, I had to top the noodles off with the saucer of lao gan ma-esque chilli crisp. For the record, the stall owner warned me of the spice when he handed it to me.

As someone who enjoys creamy textures and heavier flavours, I enjoyed this dish thoroughly. The rice noodles were soft, chewy and downright slurp-worthy, complemented by the rich tofu.

I’d go as far as to say that the Warm Tofu with Rice Noodle is the epitome of the word ‘tasty’, owing to the umami lent by the peanuts, shallots and savoury minced meat combined.

Final Thoughts

Mother's House Myanmar Cuisine - Dishes Overview

I’m glad to have chosen Mother’s House Myanmar Cuisine for my first Burmese food experience. The star of the meal was hands down the Warm Tofu with Rice Noodle, though there was plenty to shout about for the other 2 dishes.

While I cannot speak for the authenticity, having never eaten anything like this before, I felt that the dishes were well done and would be easily enjoyable by anyone.

While Woodlands Bizhub is relatively inaccessible for me, I definitely see myself braving a long commute for these dishes.
