To most Singaporeans, the Bukit Timah-Holland belt is known for the ‘McDonald’s at the now demolished King Albert Park’ or a ‘super expensive housing district‘ with big houses and flashy condominiums. Unbeknownst to many, there’s actually quite a bit of good food in this area, and not all are over the top “atas” prices as many might assume.

Since I stay around the area, I thought it my residential duty to come up with some recommendations around this lively area. Here is my list of must try places to eat in Bukit Timah and Holland area worth paying a visit to.

1. Kim’s Family Food Korean Restaurant

kims family good bukit timah road mus eat singapore

There are are lots of Korean eateries dotted around the island but quite a number of the good ones are located around the Duxton district. Most of the existing ones around the Bukit Timah-Holland belt are pretty much BBQ places with decent meats but above-average sides. If you are looking for an authentic Korean meal, Kim’s is probably where you should visit. The Banchan (side dishes) here are free and refillable, so eat as much kimchi as you can. Do try the Haemul Pajeon (Seafood Pancake) and the Budae Jjigae (Korean Army Stew).

There’s a Korean supermarket just a few doors away as well if you are looking for Korean tidbits.

2. Kampong Chicken Rice Chicken House

One of the lesser-known (for now!) chicken rice places in Singapore that serves up decent Kampong Chicken (Probably better than Five Star). If strong flavours and firm meats are your thing, do stop by. Also located at Lorong Kilat.

3. Sanpoutei Ramen

There are many Ramen eateries in Singapore but few hit the mark. Brought in by Breadtalk/Ramenplay, Sanpoutei traces its lineage to Niigata, Japan. If you are into strong and flavourful shoyu broths, do stop by. If one bowl of ramen doesn’t fill your empty belly, do try the Butariki Niigata rice mini don – slices of fatty pork over rice topped off with a raw egg yolk.

waht to eat in holland buit timah choupinette

It’s really hard to find good eggs benedicts; most often they are either too firm or reeking of white vinegar. The cosy cafe called Choupinette does it just right, with nice runny eggs done to perfection. The eggs benedict for brunch is a popular choice for many.  It’s a small outfit with limited seating so rise early or be prepared to queue on the weekends.

The first and only Mookata eatery in this entire district just opened in early October 2014 and I have already been here three times. Be prepared to queue on weekends!

Parking is quite limited in this area due to the Downtown MRT line works and there’s no MRT station yet. Just park at the Toh Yi Drive private estate and it’s a 5 minute walk away.

where to eat in bukit timah omakase burger singapore

An American burger joint with a Japanese name; Omakase simply means ‘let the chef decide’, but you still have to look through a menu here. Omakase Burger uses premium grade USDA beef for their homemade patties which are grilled only upon order thus guaranteeing a juicy centre. Just avoid meal times as the quality diminishes and leaves more to be desired.

Formerly housing the Burger Shack, this eatery has had a menu and brand revamp to feature Japanese-Hawaiian BBQ and grill options while retaining several of its popular burgers and pasta. The waffles and the chicken are must haves especially since the chicken is fried in a lighter tempura style rather than the Southern chicken variety.

Editor’s end notes

You may well disagree with me on my selection of the list must-try eateries but these are the ones I patronise on a regular basis as someone ‘in the hood’.  Nonetheless, do share your thoughts and comments as well as more suggestions where else I can eat in Bukit Timah or Holland road – I would be most interested to read them.
