I know that a ketchup cake exists, because I’ve watched a video of somebody making it, much to my horror. Then, I heard that there’s now something called a Nasi Lemak Cake. I thought to myself, this could only be a disaster.
And I was thankfully proven wrong! Would you just take a look at that: Nasi Lemak Indulgence’s Nasi Lemak Cake ($59 for 8″). It isn’t some messed-up nasi lemak-flavoured cake — it’s nasi lemak that’s been shaped into a cake.
Well, I won’t deny that it looks quite interesting. Using coconut rice as the ‘cake’, sambal as the ‘frosting’, cucumber as ‘chocolate’, and ikan bilis and peanuts as the toppings, is undeniably a novel and highly creative idea. There’s even an egg omelette sandwiched inside to perhaps act as some sort of ‘jam’.
Taste-wise, it was pretty decent nasi lemak. While the coconut rice could have been more fragrant, the sambal chilli was absolutely delicious, and the ikan bilis were perfectly crisp. The portion is also probably enough to feed about eight people.
If there’s a special occasion coming up, and you want something a little more unique, then definitely go for this one-of-a-kind Nasi Lemak Cake. You can even add toppings like prawns, cuttlefish, sambal petai and more if you like.
