Obsessive Chocolat Desire Ice Cream Cafe: Premium Chocolate Ice Cream + Handmade Cones In Jalan Besar

Update: Obsessive Chocolat Desire has moved to Jalan Besar.

The heartlands of Ang Mo Kio is a well-known hotspot for great hawker eats and hip little cafes. There’s been some talk about a new cafe in the area lately, so I headed down to see what the hype was all about.

Located where Twenty Grammes was previously at, Obsessive Chocolat Desire Ice Cream Cafe is a new cafe along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.

This cosy little cafe is run by two partners, Terence and Melvin. Upon learning that they both adore chocolates, it became clear to me where the cafe got its name from.

As we expected, Obsessive Chocolat Desire serves up a wide variety of ice cream flavours (S$3.60 for single scoop, S$7 for double scoop). However, they pride themselves particularly on their exclusive range of chocolate flavours.

The chocolate aficionado owners heard that I was a big fan of dark chocolate. So, they recommended the Signature Africa 85% Dark, their strongest dark chocolate flavour.

As its name suggests, the cacao used for this chocolate flavour actually comes all the way from Africa. In fact, for each of their chocolate flavours, the cafe sources the cacao from different countries.

Right off the bat, of the five chocolate flavours on display, this had the darkest brown hue.

The ice cream had a relatively sticky texture, to my delight. Its stickiness made it a little chewy, which I personally liked and felt was reminiscent of a gelato.

Flavour-wise, the Signature Africa 85% Dark wasn’t as bitter as I was anticipating, and I was a little disappointed.

Luckily, the bitter and sweet flavours were in perfect balance. That said, I reckon that not-so dark chocolate lovers will actually find this flavour more palatable.

To compare with their most intense dark chocolate flavour, we got the Bali Chocolate Sorbet 55%.

Naturally, the sorbet had a less milky flavour, which made the bitterness of the rich Bali cacao more prominent.

Also, it had a less viscous consistency, melting very quickly in our mouths.

Unlike many ice cream joints out there, Obsessive Chocolate Desire actually makes their own waffle Cones (S$1). The owners learnt the techniques from an Italian chef, so you know that the cones are legit.

They revealed that vanilla pods, sesame and several herbs are some of the key ingredients in making the cones. It’s no wonder the cones had a subtle yet alluring vanilla flavour which we kept munching on.

However, as these cones are freshly handmade, I’d suggest consuming them quickly so they don’t become soggy.

The cafe offers two types of waffles, the Original and Sesame (S$4). Being the adventurous foodies we are, we chose the latter.

The thick, freshly-made waffle had a firm crust and chewy interior.

While the distinct bitterness of sesame was very subtle, it lingered on after every bite.

We got the Avocado Gula Melaka and Cotton Candy Bubblegum flavours to go with the waffle.

I appreciated how the Avocado Gula Melaka tasted very authentic, and almost tasted like an avocado milkshake! Perhaps they should rename it to just ‘Avocado‘ instead since there was only a hint of gula melaka.

Unsurprisingly, the Cotton Candy Bubblegum is a hit amongst children. We found ourselves enjoying it too because of the puffy marshmallow bits in it.

Apart from ice creams, Obsessive Chocolat Desire also serves up cakes and drinks. They insisted that we try their Gateau au Chocolat Cake (S$5/S$12).

They only make two batches of it daily, so we were very lucky to be in time for their second batch.

The chocolate they use to make it hails from Madagascar and tasted unlike any other chocolates I’ve ever tried, with a sweet-spicy flavour.

Soft yet crisp on the surface, the fudge cake had a very dense centre. It certainly reminded us of a brownie, only more sticky. You should get this limited item if you’re sharing, because we found it slightly cloying after a while.

We ended off our visit with the Signature Hot Chocolat (S$5), a smooth and comforting blend of three chocolates.

What I enjoyed most about the drink is that a different chocolate flavour surfaces with every sip. One moment it’s the milkiness of white chocolate, and the next, a subtle bitterness from dark chocolate.

We also loved how we could customise the drink with a side of three different kinds of chocolate shavings.

With an affordable price range, Obsessive Chocolat Desire Ice Cream Cafe is definitely going on my list of places to chill out. Their chocolate-flavoured items are of premium quality, so it’s definitely a chocolate lover’s paradise.

We heard that the cafe gets pretty busy especially after meal times, so plan around it!
