Rice & Roll will be closing down its stall at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 by 30 Nov 2022 after two years of serving traditional stone-milled handmade cheong fun.

In a post on Instagram, Rice & Roll cited a few reasons for the closure, such as the rising cost of utilities, ingredients and rent, which have been increasing non-stop due to inflation. Manpower was also an issue as they couldn’t find interested locals to be in this trade, nor were they able to afford or meet the requirements to hire foreigners to support them.

Initially, they had plans to expand towards the end of the year, but had to stop because of inflation. The number of customers have also been decreasing ever since travelling measures were lifted.

Despite the unfortunate news, they are hopeful of returning in 2023 to serve freshly made stone-milled cheong fun once again.

The process of creating stone-milled cheong fun is an arduous one, as the rice has to be soaked in water for 10 to 12 hours with frequent checks on its consistency. Once that’s done, it is then ground down with their in-house stone mill to form the cheong fun batter that will be steamed to order.

All of this is done whilst ensuring the mixture of rice and flour is at the right temperature. Failure to do so will lead to an overly gooey or sticky cheong fun, and the process has to start all over again.

Rice & Roll has your standard cheong fun offering such as Plain (S$3). It also has unique takes on the recipe like Spicy Mala (S$3.40), Smoked Duck (S$5.40), Taiwan Sausage (S$4.40) and one of the best sellers, Chives (S$3.90).

Do remember to show Rice & Roll your support before they take a break, as there’s no telling when they’ll be returning in 2023.
