Singapore may be a hot and sweltering country all year round, but we are lucky enough to be able to indulge in seasonal delights. In celebration of Spring, which happens to be the blooming season of Sakura, Eggs ‘n Things has specially curated new Sakura-themed items for their diners.

I love to try out new dishes and made my way down to their outlet at Plaza Singapura to try them out for myself.

The first item on the menu was the Iced Sakura Grenadine Tea (S$7.80). I could see why it would be festive, with its pretty pink gradient. It was also decorated with sparkly pink edible glitter around the rim of the glass, topped off with a piece of juicy lychee.

It looked better than it tasted though. While there was a distinct floral taste for the Sakura element, I felt that the cordial was a lil’ too artificial for my liking. However, it was also fruity and carbonated, so it still made for a refreshing drink.

Their Ume Mayo Prawns With Ebiko In Butter Toasted Brioche Roll (S$22.80) was a pretty sight. The pinky-orange hues were definitely eye-catching and I was eager to dive into it. I was pleased that this tasted as good as it looked.

The brioche had a thick crispy edge, yet the centre remained soft and fluffy. Encased within was a generous amount of cold prawns well-coated in Japanese pickled plum mayo. This was surprisingly appetising, although I did wish the prawns were fresher, with more bite to them.

Nonetheless, it went well in complementing the richness of the buttery brioche. I also liked the touch of ebiko for an extra burst of savoury flavour and crunch, which made up for what was lacking in the prawns. Paired with scrambled eggs and fresh lettuce, this itself would make for a satisfying meal.

However, we unanimously agreed that the star of this dish was definitely the curly fries. They remained crisp even after being left out for a pretty long time, and the perfect gold-brown coating was elevated with a heaping amount of Sakura Denbu cod fish flakes.

It was a harmonious blend of savoury and sweet. The fries were well-seasoned with what tasted like garlic and onion powder, whilst the flakes added a touch of sweetness and lightness to them.

We had the Strawberry Waffle With Sakura Chocolate (S$18.80) as well, which I was excited for as I love waffles! They are one of my favourite tea time snacks. However, I was disappointed when the waffles were flat and one-dimensional.

They lacked texture, and whilst they were pink, they were bland on its own with no strawberry taste. Luckily, the Sakura chocolate aided in giving them a hint of floral amidst the predominantly sweet and creamy notes.

I did not expect much from the cream but I went ahead to try a mouthful anyway. Boy, was I wrong. The humongous pile of whipped cream was so light and fluffy, it literally melted in my mouth. It had a subtle hint of strawberry flavour, which made it so addictive and not jelak at all.

I really liked that it wasn’t too sweet as well, allowing the natural sweetness of the huge fresh strawberries to shine through. These definitely helped to alleviate this dish and I ended up finishing the entire dessert with no regrets.

The last item of the Sakura menu was the Sakura Mochi (S$3), which was unfortunately tough and tasteless. It was like chewing on old gum, which wasn’t pleasant at all.

There were some hits and misses in their new menu, but things like their iconic fresh whipped cream are things I would definitely return for. Give Eggs ‘N Things a try if you’re around town and let us know what you think!
