First Dibs: Swish Rolls’ first-ever creation of Gelato Croons— milky Hokkaido ice cream sandwiches

The hype around circular croissants has been on a rise in our recent media and now there have been more and more new creations. From kuehs to croissants to circular croissants and now, circular croissants with gelato, how does one keep getting new ideas? Swish Rolls has released its newest sweet treat: the gelato croons. Making a fresh debut in Singapore, it is available from 25 November to 31 December 2022 only!

When I was alerted, I immediately rushed over. Not only did the new release excite me, but the infusion of Japanese ice cream got me running. The small local bakery has collaborated with Le Varo, a Japanese gelato shop that offers premium Hokkaido ice cream freshly imported from Japan. How do soft milky scoops of gelato served on top of a warm buttery pastry sound to you?

The familiar creme-filled circular croissants are no longer stuffed with cream, but gelato this time. I only have one word— amazing.

A slit is made in between the croon to sandwich the ice cream, allowing the buttered pastry to soak up all the goodness from the creamy spread. In comparison to normal ice cream sandwiches, I honestly think that the circular shape retains a better hold of the whole sandwich in comparison to its regular counterpart.

The Almond hazelnut praline chocolate with caramelised chips (S$10) has a luxurious hazelnut spread delicately doused over the creamy gelato which hardens once poured over. I love the fact that the drizzle mimics how you bite into a piece of chocolate, giving it a crunch once you break into the soft milky ice cream. This would be one that I recommend for the nutty-chocolate lovers.

Paired with the sea-salt french butter croissant, the hints of saltiness balances out the sweet notes from the rest of the dessert.

A fruitier option for those that prefer lighter desserts would be the Passionfruit glaze with caramelised banana and toasted walnuts (S$10). It provides a tangy twist to the milk gelato, and the savoury caramelisation of the bananas elevates the whole experience.

I realised that Swish Rolls prioritises the whole melt-in-your-mouth experience as they really do think through every single condiment and textural experience before curating their menu. From salty to sweet and crispy to smooth, kudos to all their clever curations.

Last one on the menu is the Biscoff cookie glaze topped with biscoff cookie crumbs (S$9). If you’re looking to find new Biscoff flavoured treats, this is the one for you.

Alternatively, they have the option of a plain Original Hokkaido milk gelato croon, going at S$8. This thrives with those who like to savour the original flavours of each component.

If you find the circular croissants to be delicious, this is definitely one that brings it up a notch. Both aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and the tummy, a bite in and you’d probably not want to share.
