Popular Japanese unagi chain, Unatoto, will be opening its first outlet in Singapore on 25 Jan 2023 at Tanjong Pagar. Unatoto is the only fast food unagi restaurant in Japan.
Unatoto is well known in Japan for its pocket-friendly prices as well as fast service, and it’s really impressive especially when considering how unagis are generally expensive and take a long time to cook. It has nearly a hundred outlets in Japan and has expanded to other Asian countries such as Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam.
Unagi is Japanese eel and it’s typically eaten as fillets that have been dipped in a sweet soy sauce-based marinade before being cooked on a grill. They are thought to be a highly specialised dish with it being notoriously hard to cook, as it takes more than 10 years to be a full-fledged unagi chef. Unatoto has established a simple operation that trains chefs in a short period of time without sacrificing the quality of the dish.
Its signature Unadon (S$9.50) which is the belly of the eel with rice is joined by other don dishes such as Unadon Double (S$14.50), Unajyu Regular (S$12), Unajyu Large (S$20) and Unagi Tempura Don (S$15).
For light eaters, you can opt for their different sides such as Unagi Skewer with Green Onions (S$3.80), Marinated Deep-Fried Unagi Namban Pickles (S$4), Aburi Unagi Salmon Sushi Roll (S$12.80) and Unagi Liver with Ponzu (S$3.50).
There are even non-unagi dishes like the Chicken and Egg Don (S$8.50), Salmon Ikura Don (S$18) and Teriyaki Chicken Don (S$8.50) should you not be in the mood for eels. Weekday lunch just got a bit more interesting!
