When we think of hosting large gatherings, we often fall back on the usual suspects — hotpot, tze char, and… mookata. If these sound all too familiar, then Aroy Mak Mookata at Jalan Besar might just be your next go-to spot. This popular Thai BBQ steamboat joint has built a loyal following for its wallet-friendly prices and authentic flavours.

For the uninitiated, mookata combines the best of both worlds — barbecue and hotpot. At Aroy Mak, diners can grill marinated meats on a domed pan while letting vegetables, seafood, and other ingredients simmer in a flavourful broth below, resulting in a hearty, interactive meal that’s perfect for sharing with friends and family.

The best part is that Aroy Mak uses non-stick coating and a smokeless pot, reducing the need for pork lard and resulting in a less greasy dining experience.

Usually priced at S$23.80, the S$15.80 nett buffet promotion runs from 12pm to 12am daily, and is valid until the end of April. Do note that diners are limited to a 2-hour dining window, though that should be more than enough time to make your rounds.

Reservations are recommended via their reservation hotline, especially on weekends, while weekday tables tend to be easier to secure.

Diners can enjoy unlimited marinated meats, seafood, and a wide range of hotpot items from snow crab to quail eggs. Beyond the ingredients, the restaurant also prides itself on its authentic, homemade Thai chilli sauces, with recipes passed down from the owner’s family in Chiang Rai. For those looking to elevate the experience, you can top up S$5 for unlimited drinks.

Despite its budget-friendly positioning, the spread delivers bold Thai flavours, from savoury marinades to comforting broths. Unlike many open-air mookata spots, Aroy Mak is fully air-conditioned — a welcome respite from Singapore’s heat and the grill’s warmth.

Situated opposite Sim Lim Tower, the restaurant is easily accessible, making it a fuss-free option, whether you’re planning a casual lunch or a long, indulgent dinner.
