No one is exempt from inflation’s cruel grip. Prices continue to increase, more and more people continue to struggle to make ends meet. Affordable meals are difficult to come by, and many people have no choice but to skip meals or graze on unhealthy snacks. A humble noodle stall in Miri, Sarawak, is trying to combat that.
First Cafe has won the hearts of social media users with their generosity and sincerity. The stall owner offers free bowls of noodles to customers in need. This is a stark contrast to the businesses of today that do everything they can to ring our pockets dry.
Outside the stall hangs a bright red banner that reads “Eat free noodles! If you are hungry and facing hardships, come to my stall” in both Mandarin and Malay. To claim a free bowl of noodles, customers just have to say “Mau 1 Mee Jumpa Lagi”, which roughly translates to “1 Bowl of Noodles Please, See You Again”.
The banner further states that they can freely leave after filling their bellies, and that there is no need to feel guilty or ashamed. The owner only asks for these customers to help others in need when the day comes.
He says that he will be doing this for as long as he can, as his goal is to help as many people as possible. The dish on offer for free is his Mee Kering, a dry noodle dish topped with slices of pork.
The noodle stall sells Mee Kolok, which is a traditional Sarawakian dish, as well as Mee Pok, Wantan Kolok, Pork Stew Noodles, Noodle Soup with Pork Meatballs, and Claypot Mee.
If you’re in Miri, do drop by First Cafe for a bowl of noodles. Your support will help them help others.
