New in town: No Monkey Business, Potong Pasir — Wok-fried vegetarian delights

It’s always exciting to find a new vegetarian option in town. While those around me can vouch that I’m an ardent meat lover, indulging in the occasional meatless dish is what I readily spring for when looking for something lighter. A quick browse on Instagram brought No Monkey Business to my attention.

Nestled into a new space in The Venue Shoppes, the two-week old eatery features a menu that is highly compelling. Items like Char Kway Teow (S$6.80) and Signature Mutton Curry (S$6.80) jump right off the page at first glance. Admittedly, it is difficult to envision local iterations of the flat rice noodle dish without the inclusion of cockles and Chinese sausage.

No Monkey Business’ rendition of the beloved local delight is kept simpler, sticking to eggs, bean sprouts and vegetable stems all stir-fried vigorously.

In retrospect, such a decision is actually more heartening to see. This way, the chef’s expertise in wok-frying is all the more apparent, without the crutch of meat or seafood to carry the flavour of the dish.

Aside from the mains, those feeling peckish can try out No Monkey Business’ series of all-time favourite snacks. Crispy Goose Skin (S$2.80) and Calamari (S$5.80) are just some of the available meat-free snack options. Each order is also accompanied by a choice of one dip. Ordering sides of fried goodies to share at a vegetarian restaurant never seemed possible till now.

To encourage eco-friendly habits, the eatery is also offering a Bring Your Own Container (BYOC) promotion, where customers can enjoy 5% off their meal. For diners who do not eat eggs, fret not, for No Monkey Business also caters to non-egg options for their menu items.

You don’t have to be vegetarian to come to a restaurant like this. For all you know, you might even end up liking their versions more.
