Amidst the myriad of hawker stalls of Lorong 7 Toa Payoh, one particular stall humbly takes its place at Block 19 to serve crowds during the lunch hour. 777 HK Traditional Roasted Delights looks like your typical roasted meats stall, hosting favourites such as chicken rice, wanton mee, and char siew rice.

Initially, when my friends recommended this place to me, I was slightly doubtful. Well, how special could wanton mee be right? When they exclaimed, “Oh, the soup is good!”, my doubts were even more heightened. How amazing could this soup be?

Looking at their menu, I realised this special soup that captivated their taste buds was Dang Gui soup. The herbal root is known to promote blood circulation and is consumed by many for this simple health benefit. Moreover, this healthful broth containing dang gui duck meat is given free for every dish ordered.

We ordered their Wanton Mee (S$3), albeit it took a while to be served, I was happy to know that they cook the wantons on the spot. Can I just say, for the price paid, you get a free herbal tonic on the side, that’s truly worth it?

One uncle behind me even asked the hawkers if he could have what I was having.

The wanton mee is served dry, topped with leafy cai xin and thick strips of char siew. The wantons were given in a different wanton soup bowl on the side.

With char siew nicely laid out, and the vegetables stacked on the side, it was an amazing presentation.

For starters, I picked up a wanton and took a bite. I liked that the skin was thin, yet thick enough to hold the ingredients together. Each wanton was generously stuffed with pork and carrot bits.

Just from mixing up the bowl, I could already feel the springy texture of the noodles. I loaded up my spoon with the noodles and took a huge mouthful. It was sinfully oily, but bursting with flavour.

Next up was the char siew, the sauce was aptly sweet, and the char siew was thoroughly roasted. Together with the mee and the cai xin, this was in the running to be one of my favourite wanton mee. I’d say, hidden gem alert!

Now, for the highlight of the meal, the Dang Gui soup. My first sip was brimming with anticipation. The broth simply smelled of health, and imminent blood circulation.

The folks at 777 HK Traditional Roasted Delights chose to incorporate dang gui into marinating the duck meat, enhancing its benefits on the health scale.

Needless to say, I was delighted to have such a liberal portion of duck meat in the tonic. The meat was oh-so-soft. You’d think that being a herbal soup, it would be overwhelmingly bitter. On the contrary, it was brimming with umami.

Even though the surface looked shiny and maybe oily, but it tasted anything but unhealthy. The duck meat was tender and infused with dang gui essence. I could tell from each mouthful that the tonic was created through hours of stewing duck meat.

Honestly, I could not stop drinking the soup! Even the wanton soup was starting to taste herbal. I only stopped because my throat reminded me that dang gui was one of those heaty herbs.

Especially during the lunch hour, the queues at Kim Keat Palm Food Centre can get really long. I’m definitely adding this to my list of lunch options! I would certainly head next door to 777 HK Traditional Roasted Delights and get myself a bowl of wanton mee. The affordability indubitably scores huge brownie points for my tiny wallet.

By the Dang Gui soup alone, I was pretty much sold. The pairing of Dang Gui soup with signature roasts is an incredible combination. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
