Sad tidings for Dona Manis Cake Shop enthusiasts as co-founder Mr Tan Tieow Teong passed away on 13 Oct 2023. This heart-wrenching announcement was made via a Facebook post that included details regarding the wake.

While the specifics of Mr. Tan’s passing were not disclosed, the post did highlight that the cherished boss continued to commute by bus to his workplace until he reached the age of 90.

“One of the founder for Dona Manis Cake Shop. Well known and Humble boss who take bus to work til a ripe old age of 90 yo. Thank you for everything. You will be missed. ?,” posted Dona Manis Cake Shop.

Established in 1992 by a duo of close friends, Mdm Soh Tho Lang and the now-deceased Mr. Tan Tieow Teong, this shop is renowned for its signature banana pie. Their partnership was a seamless blend of Mdm Soh’s baking expertise and Mr. Tan’s management of the bakery’s day-to-day affairs.

Nestled within the lower level of Katong Shopping Centre, this unassuming shop attracted numerous Singaporeans and tourists, who often made a pit stop to acquire their delectable baked treats. It was a common sight for the store to have its items completely sold out by the afternoon, a testament to the deep affection people held for Dona Manis Cake Shop’s cakes and pies.

Numerous devoted customers of this establishment conveyed their sympathies upon learning of Mr. Tan’s passing. A post on Heritage SG Food paid tribute to Mr. Tan, with Don Lew, a user, reminiscing about the past when he would embark on a one-hour bus journey to visit Dona Manis Cake Shop. He fondly recalled Mr. Tan’s generosity in offering complimentary pastries to children, understanding that they had limited resources for food.

Claire Ariela Shen, Mr. Tan’s granddaughter, took to Facebook to pay homage to her beloved grandfather. In her tribute, she described him as “one amazing entrepreneur, with so much wisdom and care.”
