A new arrival has taken up residence at Hougang Mall— Dong Fang Mei Shi Fried Skewers & Ma La Xiang Guo. It occupies one of the outside stalls of the mall.

Dong Fang Mei Shi has another outlet located in Chinatown and they’ve been dishing out North-Eastern Chinese delights for the last 15 or so years. They clearly have a solid history, given their 4.1 star rating from over 2,500 reviews on Google.

This new outlet appears to be a more minimalist venture specialising in skewers and mala tang. They have a large selection of skewers ranging from fried items, meats and seafood to offal. Prices of the skewers vary, with the cheapest being just S$1.
The skewers are prepared upon order – they are fried and then covered in spicy seasoning. The chilli powder they use is specially curated and contains over 30 different ingredients! You can request more or less seasoning, and the staff will be happy to oblige.
There are also cups of fried items such as oyster mushrooms and sweet potatoes so no excuses for not eating a balanced meal!

For the mala tang, they have over 70 ingredients to choose from. Their soup base is boiled for over 24 hours, and comes in 4 different flavours: Original, Mala, Tomato and Tom Yum. The ingredients are charged by weight at S$2.28 per 100g, with both meat and vegetables having the same base cost.
Now, that’s definitely a good reason to head down to try this beloved restaurant today.
