Two friends, Sydi and Arrell, dreamt of opening a small business selling Malay cuisine. Their wishes finally came true when their humble 14-seater eatery, Mee+ at 477 Tampines Street 43 opened in Apr 2026. The response was great, with many turning up to support them, especially the senior folks staying around the area.

We visited them during the first week of operations and were blown away by how authentic their mee rebus was. But in the blink of an eye, everything changed when an unfortunate accident occurred on 3 Sep 2026.

An unexpected electrical distribution box explosion early in the morning triggered a fire that quickly engulfed the entire stall. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were notified at around 8.20am. About 20 people were safely evacuated from the coffeeshop next door and the affected housing units above the shop.

Thankfully, Sydi and Arrell weren’t around when the incident happened. It is chilling to think what might have happened had the accident occurred during operating hours, when customers and stall owners would have been directly in harm’s way.

For now, the business will be closed and Sydi isn’t sure if they will continue operating once everything has settled down. They thanked everyone on their Instagram page for the love and support for the past 4 months.

Netizens flooded their post about the fire with words of encouragement. Someone even volunteered to rally all the mothers in Tampines to support their business should they reopen. Personally, I have recommended Mee+ to so many friends who reside in Tampines, and most of them have become fans after trying. I genuinely hope they get the chance to reopen their doors.

On a side note, DB box exploding at such a new establishment? Could it be due to overloading of power connections? Possible high moisture and condensation issues at the shop? Or is this just a case of poor electrical wiring. Investigations are ongoing.
