Pek Kio Market & Food Centre will be closing (temporarily) from 18 Nov to 17 Dec 2024 as part of the Repairs and Redecoration (R&R) programme.

Pek Kio isn’t talked about as often as other more well-known food centres, presumably due to its rather out-of-the-way location along Cambridge Road. Despite that, it has its share of good hawkers offering mostly old-school and traditional favourites

Typically, hawker centres undergoing the Repairs and Redecoration (R&R) programme close for 2 to 3 months.

Authorities inform stallholders in advance and grant them rental remissions during the closure. Waivers for service and conservancy charges are also given. Temporarily relocating to other hawker centres during the closure is also an option, depending on availability.

Pek Kio Market & Food Centre close - Pin Wei Ccf

Among the popular stalls at Pek Kio is Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun. A family-run and -owned stall that’s gotten Michelin recognition in the past, they’ve expanded to several locations since. Although the queues aren’t what they used to be, the stall still has its share of loyal customers lining up to enjoy their cheong fun

Their menu is simple and fuss-free, with 4 types of cheong fun to choose from. The silky rice rolls are made fresh to order and generously doused in their house-made soya sauce. Perfect for breakfast.

Pek Kio Market & Food Centre close - Lai Hiang Pork Rib Prawn Mee storefront

Another beloved stall is Lai Hiang Pork Rib Prawn Mee, which has some of the longest queues in the entire market and often sells out by 2pm. Their prawn mee soup is light and refreshing, good for those who prefer something gentler on the palate.

Prices start from S$2.50, making soup affordable for the elderly and low-income families in the Pek Kio area. The stall owners are known to be friendly and accommodating. They even give soup refills upon request.

Mark your calendars and make your way down to Pek Kio Market & Food Centre before the closure to enjoy your favourite hawker foods!
