If you grew up eating roti kukus (steamed buns) dipped in curry, then you would know the joy of a warm, fluffy bread. However, most recently, one roti kukus stall, Roti Wap Bangi in Selangor has been garnering viral attention on social media and for a good reason— the freshly steamed buns are flooded with sweet fillings like chocolate and cookies and cream!
The roti kukus sold at Roti Wap Bangi is so popular that it sells out in less than 3 hours, and you can guarantee you’ll be in for a long queue. Curious, I got into my car and made the hour-long drive to Bangi and boy, despite arriving 10 minutes right after the stall had opened, there was already a queue of hungry customers.
What I tried at Roti Wap Bangi
The fillings for the roti kukus come in 4 indulgent flavours: Kaya Butter, Crunchy Chocolate, Cookies Cream and their best-seller, Milk Chocolate. Unfortunately, the highly-desired Milk Chocolate filling was sold-out the very day before my arrival. Alas! All the more reason to drown my sorrows in sweets (and to return to try that out).
You can get an individual roti kukus with the filling of your choice for RM2.50 but I recommend the 3 piece set (RM7) because this way, you get to try more flavours and it’s more affordable. But if 3 pieces don’t do your sweet tooth justice, double it with the 6 piece set at just RM12.
It’s fascinating watching the staff dish out the roti kukus. The moment a customer places an order, the staff uncovers the steamer basket and removes the fluffy roti kukus before placing it into a plastic container. Each roti kukus is then flooded with a generous amount of filling.
When I picked up each individual bun, I was surprised at how light it was. The buns were warm to touch and the wells in the centre of each bun contained a generous amount of oozy, flowy filling. I absolutely loved the texture and taste of the roti kukus— its pillowy soft and fluffy texture.
I started off with Kaya Butter. Honestly, I was looking forward to the other flavours but this surprisingly ended up being my favourite. The kaya had a rich, creamy coconut taste and luscious texture, and complemented the butter well. I think the reason I loved this so much was because it reminded me of my childhood when the roti man would come on his motorcycle and serve up his 60 cent kaya and butter buns.
Next was the Crunchy Chocolate. The chocolate filling tasted like the processed, store-bought varieties and I personally felt this was a bit too sweet for my taste buds. But I did enjoy the crunchy bits in the chocolate as it gave the filling a more satisfying texture.
I admit I had some difficulties with the final roti kukus. The warm bread had caused the Cookies Cream filling to become super flowy, almost like a liquid, as compared to its usual creamy, thick texture. This meant instead of staying put in the bun, the filling chose to instead flow into the plastic container. So what was left in the bun was a smidgen of filling. However, I could still taste the milky sweet cream with cookie crumbs which paired beautifully with the soft and fluffy white bread.
Final thoughts
If you’ve got a sweet tooth that needs satisfying, Roti Wap Bangi’s sweet, creamy fillings will definitely do the trick. However, I wished the buns could be sold without the filling because the soft, fluffy texture would be perfect to mop up piping hot chicken curry or lamb keema.
If you plan on swinging by, just keep in mind to start queuing as soon as they open otherwise you might return home empty-handed. Don’t say I didn’t tell you so!
