It seems like the pandemic and current Phase 2 (HA) restrictions aren’t deterring hardcore fans of 新美香卤面 Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee from taking the time to camp out at their new Balestier outlet, which just opened on 5 August 2021. It’s almost no surprise given its Michelin plate accolade as well as storied history—it being run by a second-generation owner who started assisting in running the business since he was 13 years old.
The original stall is situated at Old Airport Road and has been the only outlet around since 1973. But with new beginnings also comes a refreshed outlook for the second outlet, with an air-conditioned dining area—which we’ll be looking forward to enjoying once we dine-in restrictions are lifted—that boasts 80 seats. Prices might slightly higher here, but trust that their lor mee quality doesn’t come with compromise. Their lor mee start from S$6 per bowl and up to S$10 per bowl for premium size.
There are future plans to incorporate dishes unique to the Balestier outlet, but for now, customers can enjoy the same menu as the original stall.
Another little-known fact about this second outlet is that it’s a partnership with Belly Empire, which is co-owned by Night Owl Cinematics’ Ryan Tan, co-founder of Fish & Chicks, Justin Lim, and others. It’s safe to say, this venture is off to an incredible start as their first day of a cap of 500 bowls sold out by lunchtime. With that said, don’t rush down and risk yourself to infection, guys. The new outlet is a permanent home of the brand and while we know everyone’s just in a frenzied wait to get their hands on an order, safety first!
