While many of us are familiar with traditional ang ku kueh flavours like peanut and mung bean, 146 Famous Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh sells these traditional, classic treats with a modern twist.
Set up in 1985, 146 Famous Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh has been in business for well over 30 years.
Initially, they started off selling only peanut and mung bean ang ku kueh, but as the years went on, they eventually diversified to introduce exciting, unique new flavours to their growing roster.
Today, 146 Famous Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh offers a whopping variety of ang ku kueh in 11 different flavours: Peanut, Bean, Salted Bean, Coconut, Durian, Yam, Sweet Potato, Sweet Corn, Coffee, Red Bean and Green Tea.
Unlike the majority of ang ku kueh that adorn a singular bright red hue, 146 Famous Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh‘s variety of flavours come in a stunning, vibrant array of colours like pink, yellow, green and even bright turquoise.
Despite ang ku kueh being in the store name, 146 Famous Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh also sells a variety of other traditional bites, like soon kueh and sweet potato balls.
Priced at only S$1.30 each, I bought some ang ku kueh to decide if they tasted as good as they looked. Despite their moderately small sizes, I was impressed with the surprising heftiness of each kueh and upon cutting them open, I was happy to see how generously filled each of them were.
What I tried
The first flavour I tried from 146 Famous Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh was the Coffee Ang Ku Kueh. I was instantly hit by a wave of coffee aroma when I picked this up, and my hopes were high. Unfortunately, it was pretty disappointing, for the coffee taste was almost non-existent.
Instead of a fragrant coffee filling, this ang ku kueh was filled with mung bean, which was surprising. I could not detect any coffee in the mung bean filling, with only the faintest hint of coffee being in the ang ku kueh skin.
With a soft, chewy glutinous skin and generous fillings, this was a good ang ku kueh on its own, but as a coffee ang ku kueh, it definitely falls short in terms of flavour.
Though I was not super impressed with it, fret not, as the quality of 146 Famous Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh‘s treats only goes up from here.
Next, I tried the Green Tea Ang Ku Kueh, which was similar to the coffee variety as it was also filled with grainy mung bean. The difference, however, was that the green tea flavour was rather strong and evident. This ang ku kueh had a sweet, floral aroma embedded into both the mung bean filling and the glutinous skin.
Normally, I wouldn’t refer to ang ku kueh as refreshing, but in this case, the gorgeous floral tones from the green tea flavour somehow made it taste like a refreshing cup of tea.
Afterwards, I tried an ang ku kueh flavour that I have never seen in any other shop: the Sweet Potato Ang Ku Kueh. I was initially attracted to its vibrant bright pink colour but I ended up being more impressed by its taste.
The sweet potato in this ang ku kueh tasted completely natural like pure, mashed sweet potato. I was initially a little sceptical of whether the sweet potato filling would taste artificial or overly sweetened, but I was pleasantly surprised by the earthiness of the sweet potato.
Finally, the last ang ku kueh that I tried also happened to be my favourite: the Yam Ang Ku Kueh.
Like the Sweet Potato Ang Ku Kueh, I was worried about whether this kueh would be filled with an artificially-flavoured saccharine yam paste, but now, I’m glad to name this Yam Ang Ku Kueh as one of the best ang ku kueh I’ve ever had.
The yam filling was all natural with slight milky undertones and a lovely innate sweetness and earthiness from the yam. It was certainly not in the least bit artificial and provided every bit of the strong yammy taste that I was looking for.
Final thoughts
Overall, I was rather impressed by these ang ku kueh. With the variety of ang ku kueh stores available in Singapore, 146 Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh stands out as an old school kueh store with lots of heart and creativity.
Though I only tried four out of 11 flavours available at 146 Famous Bukit Merah Ang Ku Kueh, I will definitely be back to try the rest.
