If a laid-back vibe, cold beer and comfort food is your thing, you need to check out Malthouse along East Coast Road.

The establishment sits in the same spot where the fondly remembered Cheesecake Cafe used to be. You won’t find any cakes here though – Malthouse is all about serving up good grub and seems to have the formula down pat.

A cosy space + friendly service + burgers, pizzas and beer. A winning combination if there ever was one. Malthouse even opens on most public holidays, so you know where you can go to catch the next Tennis Final.

All food and drink prices are also nett, so don’t forget to tip your server!

The fridges are stocked with beers and ciders from around the world, which start from only $9 a bottle. Malthouse is definitely joining the ranks of the other watering holes in the area with this selection.

You’ll also find 12 draft beers on tap from across the globe, including a few craft labels that you’ve probably never heard of before. Ask the friendly bartender to let you try a few, before you decide.

Pints are only $10 each during happy hour (5pm – 8pm), so you’ll be glad to know that knocking back a few isn’t going to cost you too much.

I’d recommend trying the Fourpure American Pale Ale or the Central City Red Racer IPA, if you like less hoppy and slightly fruitier varieties.

The menu is filled with comfort food (and drinking snack food), and of course I had to order the Classic Cheese Burger ($16), which comes highly recommended by the way.

Double cheddar cheese, gherkin pickles, onions and greens are layered on top of a juicy beef patty that was cooked to perfection. The Chef certainly isn’t scrimping on the cheese and I’m not complaining.

You can also add Egg ($1), or Bacon ($2) to make the burger that bit more comforting. Served with a good portion of fries, this is what I call a proper meal.

Malthouse is also really popular for Handmade Pizzas, which come with many different toppings to choose from. I had the Chilli Beef ($18), which has minced beef, garlic, chillies, parsley and of course, cheese.

The pizza was actually pretty spicy from the use of chilli padis, so only order this if you can take the heat. All pizzas are only $10 on Tuesdays, so you know where your next weekday gathering should be.

Siglap and the East Coast Road area is already quite happening in the evenings, and Malthouse draws a steady following. The restaurant and bar is also pet-friendly, providing doggies with water bowls.

Get a few of your mates together, or you know, just come down with your pup!

Expected damage: $9 – $30 per pax
