It looks like basic commodities these days aren’t so basic after all. If you think spending almost $10 on a fancy barista-crafted latte is pricey, wait till you hear about the world’s most expensive coffee beans reaching our shores on 6 November.

The beans originate from a small mountainous region in Panama and are cultivated at 1,800m above sea level, in a town called Boquete. So how handsome a price are we talking about? Well, Hacienda La Esmeralda snatched a whopping US$601 (S$814) per pound at the Best of Panama coffee auction, hosted by the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama this past August!

It even earned 94.1 points out of 100 for its cup profile (which is basically fancy talk for coffee quality).

Get your sip on (and cash ready) at The Coffee Academics — Scotts Square and Raffles City — as an espresso serving of the Esmeralda Geisha will set you back by $85, and will only be brewed for 80 cups.

However, if you truly are a cuppa connoisseur who can’t wait a day longer, you can always fork out $128 to attend GastroMonth Singapore, where The Coffee Academics will hold a cupping and brewing demonstration, along with a serving of the prized coffee.

Expected damage: $85

The Coffee Academics: 6 Scotts Road, Scotts Square, #02-01/02, Singapore 228209 | Opening hours: (Daily) 9am – 9pm | Tel: +65 6538 1940 | Website | Facebook | Instagram
