Think that the traditional Malay snack, goreng pisang (fried banana fritters) is just simple and boring? Well, Cheezy Bananasss located at the iconic Golden Mile Food Centre has some innovative renditions to spice up your life.

Cheezy Bananasss offers a playful twist on conventional goreng pisang, adding grated cheddar cheese over the fried banana fritters.

They serve up wacky flavours such as Salted Egg Yolk, Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup and there’s even a Sushi goreng pisang with an optional side of wasabi on top of it.

These Classic Pisang (S$5/regular with 3 pieces and 1 flavour, S$8/large with 5 pieces and 1 flavour, S$18/jumbo with 12 pieces and up to 4 flavours) had a golden brown crispy crust on the outside, with sweet and creamy banana on the inside. The contrast in texture was very satisfying.

I went for the popular Peanut Butter flavour, which came with thick and creamy peanut butter. The nutty notes from the spread helped to lift the natural sweetness of the bananas.

The grated cheese on top added a sharp savoury flavour, but I found that the taste of the cheese was a little overwhelming and covered the natural flavour of the bananas.

Always game for something unique, I decided to try the Salted Egg Yolk flavour, which came with creamy salted egg yolk sauce drizzled over the goreng pisang.

The salted egg yolk sauce was mildly savoury but tasted more like a slightly pungent cheese sauce. I didn’t really enjoy this flavour, because the strong cheesy taste overwhelmed my palate.

On top of that, the salted egg yolk sauce was red, as opposed to the bright yellow that we are used to. This definitely wasn’t the most visually appealing snack.

The weirdest flavour had to be the Sushi + Wasabi. The owner first spreads a thin layer of wasabi over the fried banana before sandwiching it between two crispy layers of seaweed.

The seaweed added an extra crunch, which contrasted nicely with the smooth and creamy filling within.

What surprised me the most was how the sharp and spicy kick from the wasabi managed to accentuate the sweetness of the bananas, while also cutting through the greasy crust.

I would recommend going for the Peanut Butter or Classic Pisang, because you just can’t go wrong with these flavours. But if you’re feeling adventurous, then go for the Sushi + Wasabi.

I’ve never thought of spreading wasabi or even salted egg yolk sauce over goreng pisang before, so I’m glad I gave this a try.

If you’re looking for a quick snack, then I recommend heading down to Cheezy Bananasss to give their wacky bananas a shot.
