To celebrate the season of pink, Starbucks is rolling out two new creamy drinks, now available at all outlets. The Azuki Crème Blossom Frappuccino and Matcha Azuki Crème Blossom Frappuccino both feature azuki (red beans) as their star ingredient.

The Azuki Crème Blossom had a pink, dreamy hue that’s very fitting for the spring theme, if you ask me.

They blend red beans with milk and ice before topping it with an entire layer of red beans. The signature whipped cream, pink and white rice petals and cranberry bits then complete the drink.

Despite its dreamy looks, the drink was absolutely underwhelming. For one, the combination of red beans and milk didn’t work out. The drink was rather bland, with just an extremely faint hint of sweetness. I struggled to finish it because of its lack of flavour.

I felt the layer of red beans on top were also rather out of place. Their crunchy texture didn’t complement the drink well and it was hard to get them up the straw too.

On the other hand, the Matcha Azuki Crème Blossom was much more palatable. Likewise, they blend up red beans, milk and ice together, but this time with matcha. They then complete the drink with the same whipped cream, rice petals and cranberry toppings.

The matcha certainly made a whole lot of difference as it added sweet and bitter notes to the drink. With these flavours taking centre stage, the red beans were a good complement.

As is the case for most of Starbucks’ seasonal new drinks, these frappuccinos will only be available for a limited period of time. Try them before they’re gone, and let us know if you can find the taste of spring!
