I know it will be a sad day when Singaporeans don’t spend Sunday afternoons cafe-hopping. But here is a special one that I promise is worth your while. MoMiJi Kyoto Cafe is unlike any other cafe you’ve visited and is a paean to the ancient city of Kyoto.

The creator of MoMiJi Kyoto Cafe is none other than prolific chef-founder Teppei Yamashita, who is also the guy behind well-known concepts such as Man Man Unagi and the ever-popular Teppei Syokudo.

Since travel has sort of been a cuss-word as of late, I shall not sell you on the usual spiel of why MoMiJi Kyoto might be your means of escape. Except that it is. A truly immersive experience, your time at MoMiJi Kyoto Cafe begins with a walk through those iconic crimson Tori gates. Then, it will bring you to a room with four private booths, each representing the different seasons.
Each booth is decked out with high-definition scenes of Kyoto in the different seasons. So, experience the wonders of Spring, complete with burgeoning pink sakura flowers that are the highlight of Spring.
If not, savour the changing seasons of Autumn with maple leaves in shades of burning red, glowing oranges, and warm yellows. You might hear the familiar crunch of leaves if you listen hard enough.
Instead of a menu of generic Japanese treats, MoMiJi Kyoto Cafe serves an array of Kyoto-centric treats that is true to the city. If you didn’t already know, Kyoto is famous for its Uji matcha and red bean snacks.
That’s why the Matcha Pudding Kyoto Hot Sandwich (S$16.20) serves as a great introduction to what Kyoto has to offer. A dollop of cream on a rich matcha pudding and a classic red bean butter toast just scream all things Kyoto.
If not, something savoury like the Smoked Salmon Sandwich (S$15.20) makes for a perfect afternoon.
