The moment I laid my eyes on these egg-shaped pancakes online, I made an immediate trip down to Haha Egg located in the pasar malam outside Bedok 85 Fengshan Food Centre to grab them before 13 May 2023

Specialising in an assortment of quick bites, Haha Egg stands adjacent to popular Taiwanese snack stall Emo Snacks. Its packaging is just adorable!

haha egg - pick up

Each order at Haha Egg comes with 4 pieces where one can choose from a variety of flavours including the premium Durian (S$8 for 4 pieces) or Mentaiko (S$8 for 4 pieces). If you are looking to spend less, go for the regular ones — priced at S$6 instead — filled with Kaya, Glutinous Rice or even Chicken Floss

haha egg - mochi

I mixed 2 flavours into my crate of ‘eggs’ — Mochi and Matcha ($S8). While I expected little flavour from the former, its subtle sweetness coupled with its chewy texture drew me in.

haha egg - matcha

Haha Egg’s matcha — unsurprisingly — was my favourite. Possessing a creamy consistency with a robust green tea taste, the flavour matched well with the spongy and soft batter. Of course, I enjoyed halving the 2 flavours and combining them into 1 for the best of both worlds!

haha egg - wrap

Unconsciously, I found myself placing a 2nd order for Haha Egg’s Sesame Chicken Jian Bing (S$8.90). A heap of ingredients were poured into the making of this heavy construction.

The spicy seasoned pancake base was filled with beancurd skin, lettuce, an egg, shredded potato, kelp, sesame seeds and at last, chopped up deep fried sesame chicken chunks.

After the massive pancake was wrapped and placed into a convenient paper bag, I noticed its layers similar to that of a croissant. However, the overlapping of dough layers made the overall wrap dense and heavy.

Taste wise, I was rather perplexed as I assumed that the generous amount of toppings would create a flavour explosion. Instead, the flavours tasted were mainly from the seasoned chicken and pickled potatoes. There was also a thick doughy component throughout the length of the wrap which tasted dry.

All in all, I recognise that the price point is quite steep considering the size of these treats. But on rare occasions, I do find myself being excited to make such purchases.

These will only be available till 13 May 2023, so drop by if you are in the vicinity to pick up these little goodies at Haha Egg along with other pasar malam staples!
