As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. This goes for AEON Sunway Pyramid, that’s bidding farewell on 31 Jul 2023. At the end of the month, the general merchandise store cum supermarket franchise will be pulling down its shutters permanently.
In a Facebook post from 14 Jul 2023, the mall stated “With a heavy heart, Lion would like to bid farewell and let’s go down memory lane together by visiting Aeon for the very last time before 31 July”.
AEON Sunway Pyramid first began operations in 2007, a decade after the mall’s inception. Ever since, the chain has been a mainstay due to its wide variety of products. From household items and clothing, to children’s toys and groceries, Aeon was a one-stop shop that literally carried everything.
Prior to this startling announcement, regular mall visitors noticed that the stock of products in AEON was rapidly depleting. On top of that, the department store was actively trying to get rid of existing stock by selling the items with big discounts.

Although Sunway Pyramid didn’t provide a clear explanation as to why AEON is closing down, they did link a page from their website in the Facebook post. This page, titled “Sunway Pyramid Enhancement Progress” hints at the mall’s ongoing makeover. It’s safe to conclude that renovations will be happening at what was once AEON.
This closure came as a shock to netizens, especially for those who grew up going to the mall. Nobody had ever thought that AEON would close its doors for good after 16 years of service. Several people had commented on the Facebook post with anecdotes of their first jobs at AEON, and about their weekend grocery runs with family members.
Despite its closure in Sunway, they still have 33 other outlets across Malaysia, so don’t worry too much. Be sure to pay a final visit to AEON Sunway Pyramid before it’s gone!
