From 1 to 3 Sep 2024, Poh Kee Chicken Rice in Toa Payoh had offered an insanely valuable promotion to thank its loyal customers, charging only S$2 for a plate of chicken rice. However, the deal concluded on a sour note merely hours before the end of the first day.

Calling the small event Customer Appreciation Day, 44-year-old Mr Poh had intended to give back to the community by offering the low price for 3 whole days. The promotion was expectedly met with a huge crowd, though he soon realised that most of the visitors lining up were unfamiliar faces.

Mr Poh’s plan to express his gratitude to his regulars failed as they were forced to leave instead due to the long queue, deciding to return only after the promotion wrapped up.

The original price ranges from S$4 to S$6 — featuring dishes like Chicken Rice, Roasted Pork Rice, and Char Siew Rice. Customers were eager to get a bite as the deal was not only applicable to plain ol’ Chicken Rice, but other options as well.

Wow, just when I thought Mr Poh’s generosity couldn’t get any bigger!

Sadly, not everyone can appreciate nice things given to them. The stall was continuously hit by hostile customers — greedy opportunists insisting on getting half-a-chicken with their S$2 rice, grumpy ones threatening to leave a bad review if the offer was not made permanent, and ‘Karens’ that got angry when the chicken rice sold out at 4pm. Imagine that!

For the remaining days of the promotion, Mr Poh resolutely changed the deal to a S$2 discount per order instead.

Those familiar with the stall will know that this is not the first time that the owner has extended his kindness to Poh Kee Chicken Rice customers.

In 2023, Mr Poh had stood up for a visually-impaired regular after getting a police report filed against her for bringing a guide dog along. The heroic act received praise from netizens on the Internet

If you missed the Customer Appreciation Day, don’t be sad! Keep an eye out for any upcoming event in the future. Even with regular prices, Poh Kee Chicken Rice is still an optimal choice for an affordable chicken rice meal (or pork, whichever you prefer.)
