On 21 Sep 2024, Garden Western Grill — a popular Petaling Jaya eatery in Medan Selera Wawasan — took to Facebook with a rather confrontational response to a dissatisfied customer’s review of their Fish & Chips (RM33).

The customer had voiced frustration over the dish, saying it wasn’t worth the price due to an overwhelming amount of batter compared to the fish fillet. To drive her point home, she even posted a picture showing the separated batter and fish.

In Malaysia, food reviews on social media are practically a national pastime, where food lovers share their experiences and help others discover new spots. However, Garden Western Grill isn’t a fan of this practice, urging customers to address their grievances privately to them.

They even followed up with a separate post defending their Fish & Chips, fuelling an ongoing debate among netizens. Some took the eatery’s side, while others sided with the customer.

Loyal patrons rallied behind the restaurant, with a few suggesting that those looking for a better quality Fish & Chips should try other places, reminding people that Garden Western Grill is just a humble stall in a food court. Others, however, advised the business to treat negative feedback as constructive criticism instead of escalating things on social media.

Interestingly, some claimed that despite the restaurant’s call for direct feedback, those who did reach out often found themselves blocked or met with hostility. It also seems that every complaint will only fall on deaf ears.

But here’s the real question — how is the Fish & Chips, really? While the portion is undeniably large, many have echoed the same complaint: there’s too much batter and not enough fish. Still, other diners have no issue with it and enjoy the dish.

While both sides have valid points, I believe this situation could’ve been handled with more tact. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Is the $5 orh luak from this hawker stall that small to warrant complaints online?
