Serving up Hainanese cuisine since 2013, British Hainan will be closing its flagship outlet at 75 Carpmael Road sometime in February 2025.

British Hainan was founded by Frederick Puah in 2013. Frederick’s father had worked as a cook in a British household, and the Hainanese-inspired Western food he grew up eating is what he serves at British Hainan. The restaurant is famed for their Hainanese Pork Chop and Traditional Oxtail Stew.

The former uses bread crumbs for its crust instead of the traditional crushed Jacob’s Cream Crackers to provide a more controlled flavour and texture. Meanwhile, the Traditional Oxtail Stew is a labour of love that’s stewed for 6 to 7 hours and served with baguettes to mop every bit of sauce up.

With the closure of this outlet, this brings the total number of outlets down to one, located at 158 Kallang Way. While the specifics of the closure weren’t elaborated on, British Hainan’s Facebook post on the situation stated “redevelopment” as a reason.

They also expressed a desire to find a new location that had the same “vintage” feel as their Joo Chiat one, and thanked Mr Seah Chong Pok of Seah Construction for giving them rental prices lower than market rate.

British Hainan is also optimistic about “continuing their journey” and invites guests to come down for one final hurrah before their Feb 2025 closure. Most of the interior decor and vintage pieces are also for sale, so if you’d like to bring home a piece of history, head down soon!
