1. Chara

Chara may be one of Bangsar’s relatively fresh faces among an endless sea of restaurants, yet it strides in like a seasoned contender, reimagining woodfire through a distinctly Asian and Southeast Asian lens. Its name loosely weaves together references to charred cooking, aroma, and even “cara kita”, a reflection of our way of embracing flavour.

Instead of the usual Western smokehouse stereotype, Chara celebrates fire the way we grew up knowing it, where spice, char and the perfume of burning wood come together like poetry.

The space feels inviting and cosy no matter where you’re seated. Indoors wraps you in soft light and easy conversation while the alfresco area hums with neighbourhood charm. That said, the bar is where the spectacle unfolds.

A front-row view of the parilla grill lets you watch embers glow as prime cuts kiss the flame. Durian wood fuels the heat with precision and clean smoke, giving each char line intention rather than purely aesthetics.

Steaks may be the first thing you notice but the seafood here deserves its spotlight too. Grilled pomfret and mackerel gain extra flavour and a satisfyingly crisp exterior through dry-ageing, while the tuna stands out more for its heightened flavour and silken bite. Watching fish blister to perfection feels almost meditative.

Now, let’s eat. Start with the Irish Premium Fresh Oysters (RM17 per piece, RM98 for half-dozen) dressed in yuzu mignonette, ikura and classic condiments, cool and briny like sea breeze trapped on a shell.
If oysters are not your first love, the Seared 3-Day Aged Tuna (RM33) might convert you. Lightly scorched yet tender inside, brightened with ponzu, oil and orange segments, it is indulgence in bite-sized form.

Salad seekers and lovers of local greens should lean towards the Grilled Prawns and Pomelo Salad (RM34). Ulam raja and pucuk paku leaves are tossed in tangy mild spice, topped with smoky prawns, and bedazzled with juicy pomelo.

Another starter that earns a permanent spot in memory is the CHARA Hummus (RM30) accompanied by house-made pita, poppadom and supple sourdough bread, finished with date reduction, pomegranate and sumac.

For the main event, the Grilled 5-Day Aged Golden Pomfret (RM72) is nearly a national treasure. Crispy skin, tender flesh and a sambal laced with Thai aromatics make it a dish worth lingering over.

Those who speak steak as a first language will enjoy the Argentinian Black Angus Steak (ribeye at RM199, sirloin at RM179, picanha at RM129). Add sides for a complete love story.

The House Special Egg Fried Rice (RM16) delivers wok-breath and bold flavour, made even more exceptional with Sarawak Hill Rice that brings a nuttier, sweeter, and more distinct character than your usual grains. Alongside it, the Roasted Cauliflower with Anchovy Cream (RM14) tastes sinful in the most delightful way. A drizzle of Roasted Bone Jus ties everything together like a final bow.
If you needed a sign to make dinner plans this weekend let it be this. Gather your favourite people, settle into the glow of Chara and let the taste of its ‘char’ say the rest. Seatings are limited, so click here to make your reservations for a smoother experience!

2. Urban Daybreak

When Bangsar and brunch are mentioned together, Urban Daybreak is never far behind. Founded in George Town, Penang in 2016, this Australian-style brunch cafe has since found a second home in Bangsar as its only other outlet. Doors open at 7.30am daily, and even on a weekday, the steady stream of regulars tells you everything you need to know.

Urban Daybreak is pork-serving and pet-friendly, and much of what lands on the table is made in-house. Sausages, ricotta and other essentials are prepared with care, paired with warm service without being overbearing. But like all good brunch stories, it ultimately comes back to the food.

Start gently with a tartine layered on their artisanal signature sourdough, toasted just right and topped with a choice of sweet or savoury combinations. The Avocado and Ricotta Tartine (RM30) is a stunner — layering creamy ricotta with honey date jam, sesame walnuts and apricots.

Those leaning towards savoury should not miss the Guinness Pulled Pork Tartine (RM35), where tender pulled pork meets slaw, sunny-side-up eggs and a generous heap of crispy onions. It commands all your five senses the moment it arrives on your table

Ready for Urban Daybreak’s famous Big Breakfast (RM48)? Buttered artisan toast, eggs done your way, in-house spiced sausage loaves, bacon rashers, sauteed mushroom, potato croquettes, roasted tomatoes, baked beans and tomato chilli jam come together in a breathtaking spread.

For something classic with a touch of soul, the Fried Chicken Waffle (RM36) delivers fluffy waffles crowned with juicy chicken karaage, baked beans, fried eggs and maple mustard.

Those with a sweeter inclination should opt for the Signature French Toast (RM35), where soft slices of bread meet peanut butter, caramelised banana, and bacon.

Coffee matters here, and it shows. The Hot Latte (RM15) is one of the best coffee we’ve ever sipped, while the Iced Coconut Cloud (RM16) adds a tropical note for those who like their caffeine with a little flair. The Stoner’s Fizzy (RM18) offers a refreshing concoction of Niko Neko’s Ajisai matcha, peach honey, and soda.
Smoothies and juices round things out nicely, with No More Constipation (RM18) blending banana and dragonfruit into a thick, refreshing crowd-favourite, and Daddy (RM18) pairing banana and strawberry into an indulgent creamy drink.
Urban Daybreak does not try too hard to impress. It simply does what it does well, morning after morning. In Bangsar, that consistency is perhaps its greatest charm.

3. Porch & Pantry

Tucked behind the gates of Bayu Angkasa, Porch & Pantry is a neighbourhood cafe that blends a lifestyle space with a community-driven concept. The layout shifts between a cosy indoor area and a breezy outdoor porch, with a small play corner for children and pet-friendly seating outside.

Beyond dining, the space also doubles as a retail corner, where shelves are lined with in-house bakes by Take A Whisk — a former home-based baker from Ara Damansara now officially collaborating with the cafe — alongside coffee beans and pantry staples like Rise & Shyne pancake mix.
You’ll also spot charming wooden toys by Koala Spark, a Singapore-based brand. These aren’t random additions; both brands are part of the same Mums Unite community founded by the owner.

The menu centres on all-day brunch and comfort plates with local and Western influences, brought together with precision. Go for the Wagyu So Fancy (RM39), which pairs a well-seasoned wagyu patty with fresh greens, melted cheese, pickles, and house sauce in soft beetroot buns.

For something richer, the U-Don-Know-Mee (RM26) features springy udon in a creamy miso base, finished with an onsen egg that folds into the noodles for a luxurious bite, alongside sauteed mushrooms.

Craving something lighter? Opt for Cod Fish Tacos (RM28) — crispy battered cod with fresh slaw and tangy house sauce in warm tortillas, topped with diced peppers. On a more homely note, the Eurasian Devil Curry (RM17) delivers a Portuguese-style gravy with tender chicken drumstick and soft potatoes, served with rice.

To finish, the Birthday Pancakes (RM18) are worth ordering even without the occasion, a soft stack with a gently chewy centre, layered with vanilla ice cream, berries, sprinkles, and a birthday topper.

Drinks here are not to be overlooked. Their Signature Apong Latte (RM17) combines Melbourne espresso with salted milk and Sarawak gula apong, while the Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte (RM18) pairs ceremonial grade matcha with decadent strawberry puree.
Altogether, Porch & Pantry presents a well-rounded offering suited for both casual brunches and slower afternoons, with a setting and menu that fit naturally into Bangsar’s pace. An easy pick for your next meal in the area — swing by with your loved ones!

4. PULP

A well-known establishment among Bangsar restaurants, PULP’s name derives from the rich history of its location and the process of coffee seed extraction. Situated in what used to be the cutting room of a printing factory, they were inspired by the material itself— paper, that’s made from pulp. In conjunction with that, in order to remove the seeds, coffee has to be depulped.
Before you dig in, be sure to order a cup of coffee. PULP’s coffee is a favourite among cafe hoppers in Kuala Lumpur. Apart from the usual suspects, they offer unique curated selections that may be difficult to find elsewhere, like their The Esther (RM18) and Cocomo Cloud (RM16).

For something heartier, dig into their food menu — featuring Gula Melaka French Toast (RM26), Fried Chicken Sandwich (RM29), and Lamb Ragu Pasta (RM38), amongst others. At PULP, you’ll also have the chance to get a taste of their seasonal special like Spiced Pumpkin Soup (RM22).

5. VCR

VCR is perhaps Bangsar’s most famous cafe. Back when hipster cafes were a relatively new concept in KL, VCR was one of the trailblazers that set the trend into motion. Even after so many years, their restaurants are consistently packed with patrons on the weekends (not that Bangsar is never not packed). On weekdays, you’ll spot people hunched over their laptops, cup of coffee in hand.
Not only do they have multiple outlets, one here in Bangsar and another at Jalan Galloway, they’ve even established extensions of VCR like VCR Stacks, which focuses on sandwiches; VCR Bakehouse serving artisanal baked goods, and VCR Ritchie, a restaurant.

A visit to VCR is not complete without the Pennsylvania’s Soul (RM30), a spicy habanero fried chicken and sourdough waffle dish that’s topped with Thai basil, Sriracha mayo, and chrysanthemum syrup. If you’re there in the evening, you’ll find dishes like Typhoon Shelter (RM30) made with semolina spaghetti and a medley of seafood and Thai flavours, as well as Grandma’s Pesto (RM28).

6. Breakfast Thieves

After the success of the original branch in Melbourne, Malaysian founders Brandon Chin, Edwin Koh, and Joel Teh decided that it was only right to bring the award winning cafe back to Kuala Lumpur. Breakfast Thieves in Bangsar is known for their seamless blend of Asian and Australian flavours, drawing customers to return to the restaurant time and time again.
While many eateries tend to come and go, Breakfast Thieves has held up against the test of time. This Bangsar restaurant is suitable for brunch with the girls and lunch with your family; they offer eats ranging from classic cafe dishes to elevated comfort meals.

For the early risers, their breakfast menu includes Terry Benedict (RM34) that uses slow braised black pepper Australian beef brisket, as well as The Mughal Legend (RM32), a Persian spiced chicken keema dish with baked eggs.
Those looking for some Southeast Asian flavours should check out their Pho My Love (RM40) made from rich duck broth, or the Bastardized Rice (RM40), which includes wagyu charsiu, poached chicken leg, and aromatic chicken rice.

7. Alexis Bistro

Alexis Bistro is one of those restaurants in Bangsar that’s so iconic, it’s become a reliable dining and hangout spot. It usually goes like this: you aren’t interested in the restaurant gamble where you could potentially spend your hard earned money on a mediocre experience, so you go to Alexis where the food is guaranteed to be good, and the ambience is even better.
This eatery serves a varied mix of western and Asian cuisine, and a wide range of desserts. If you want something a little more special, try the Nasi Istimewa Alexis (RM45) that comes with mango kerabu, eggplant tumis, tamarind prawns, and chicken kapitan curry, or the Alexis Tuna Salad (RM35) with seared tuna.

They even have pizzas like Napoletana (RM39), Gamberetto (RM49) with garlic prawns and oven dried tomatoes, and Pollo (RM43) made with grilled chicken. Many go to Alexis Bistro for their Tiramisu (RM20), so don’t miss out on this sweet and rich treat.

8. Koffie Craft
Eet smakelijk! If you’re craving Dutch delicacies, then this restaurant slash cafe in Bangsar South City is definitely one of the best. It does vary when it comes to authenticity, but in Malaysia, Koffie Craft might be one of the top spots for you to visit for a true taste of the Netherlands.

Koffie Craft offers a wide array of dishes, from breakfast and ciabatta sandwiches, to burgers and noodles. Said to be almost similar to the version back in Netherlands, their Broodje Bitterballen (RM34.80) is a must-try. Picture crispy yet juicy panko-crusted ragout balls, nestled between 2 soft buns, served with mustard and mayonnaise.

Don’t miss out on one of the famous Dutch delicacies — Oven-Baked Dutch Baby Pancakes! At this spot, you can get the sweet indulgence in 4 varieties: Cherry Berry Baby (RM31.80) featuring a medley of tangy berries and mango, Apricot Baby (RM31.80), Apple Baby (RM31.80), and Chocolate Baby (RM30.80). All come with 3 scoops of imported vanilla ice cream.

9. Nature’s Vegetarian Restaurant

Those who follow a plant-based diet don’t have to worry when they’re in Bangsar, as Nature’s Vegetarian Restaurant has everything you need. From the outside, the eatery may not look as trendy as the others on this list, but the food served inside definitely packs a punch.
As expected from a Chinese restaurant, they have a pretty solid dim sum menu that features dishes like Steamed Mix Vege Dumpling (RM10.50), Vege Satay (RM15.90), and Steamed Shark Fin Dumpling (RM10.50).

Other than dim sum, they also have plenty of side dishes for a filling meal with rice. Some examples of what they have to offer include Assam Prawns (RM29.80) to add some tangy spice, and Butter Fried Prawns (RM29.80) for that home cooked meal feel.

10. Proof Pizza + Wine

When it comes to big groups, pizza is the easiest thing to order because it’s easy to share. Everyone gets a slice, and the dish becomes a topic of conversation. Proof Pizza + Wine is the perfect restaurant for dates and catching up with friends in Bangsar.
Start off with an appetiser like Posh Truffle Fries (RM28), which are straight-cut fries tossed with grana padano, truffle oil, and served with truffle mayonnaise, or Calamari Fritti (RM34) with garlic aioli and mesclun salad.

Proof’s pizza selection is so wide that it’s split into 4 sections: classic, local-vore, gourmet, and savoury + sweet. Their pizzas come in 2 sizes, medium and large. They have Chorizo Iberico Cular (RM38 and RM55) with Spanish sausage made from Iberico pork, and Figs & Gorgonzola Pizza (RM30 and RM48) topped with caramelised walnuts and organic honey dips.

How to choose a Bangsar spot for brunch or dinner
Looking for the perfect cafe or restaurant to visit in Bangsar? Choose based on timing and dining style. For brunch, Urban Daybreak and Breakfast Thieves suit early starts and varied plates, while Porch & Pantry offers a slower, family-friendly setting. Coffee-focused stops like PULP and VCR work for lighter meals or casual catch-ups. For dinner, Chara fits those prioritising grilled meats and seafood in a more deliberate setting, whereas Alexis Bistro provides a dependable all-round menu. If dining in groups or sharing, Proof Pizza + Wine is more practical, while Koffie Craft or Nature’s Vegetarian Restaurant cater to specific dietary or cuisine preferences.
