Whenever I dine at a food court in Orchard, I expect to fork out at least S$6. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I spotted dishes from just S$1.90 at Bai Wei Mini Bowl Go! in Wisma Atria’s Food Republic. I even did a double take to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.

If you find this stall and concept familiar, that’s because they also have a sit-down eatery at SingPost Centre. The only difference? There’s no GST charges here!

With over 30 varieties of dishes on rotation each day, choosing what to have for lunch can be a real dilemma.

The prices of each bowl ranges from S$1.90 right up to S$5.90. Whether you want something light — a single dish with or without a S$1 bowl of White Rice — or a post-work feast, it’s entirely your call.

We kicked off with the Sichuan Boneless Fragrant Chicken (S$3.90). Golden-fried chicken cubes were tossed with peanuts, dried chilli, Sichuan peppercorn, and sesame seeds. The chilli seeds added a fiery kick — one spoonful was enough to awaken my senses and whet my appetite for more.

The Sweet & Sour Fish (S$3.90) stayed delightfully crispy under the sauce — though a tangier, less sweet version might hit even better. Savoury and gently spiced, the Yu Shiang Eggplant (S$2.90) with minced pork went very well with rice. I couldn’t help but wolf down every single piece.

bai wei mini bowl - hakka fried pork

While my dining partner devoured the Hakka Fried Pork (S$2.90), the oversized pieces forced me into careful nibbling. I just wished they were cut into smaller pieces for more convenience.

bai wei mini bowl - fish in golde broth

I was slightly disappointed when the Sweet & Spicy Fish Fillets in Golden Broth (S$5.90) became my least favourite dish of the afternoon. Though the fish was fresh, the flavour of the broth fell flat and I couldn’t taste any hint of sourness to reset my palate.
