Quick Summary

ABC Brickworks Market will close from 9 April to 7 June for redecorating and repair works, following earlier concerns over rodent sightings and recent hawker centre fires that highlight the need for infrastructure and kitchen hood upgrades. The refresh has drawn complaints about frequent closures, though past shutdowns were short cleaning exercises, and some diners fear higher prices. The move appears aligned with broader hygiene improvements, making the update most relevant to regular patrons and stallholders.

As all food centres do, ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre is set to refresh from 9 Apr to 7 Jun.

Located just behind IKEA, ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre is difficult to miss with its large lettering. This food centre is officially taking a 2-month break, this time, for official redecorating and repair work.

A possible reason for the current renovations could be the previous rat infestation that occurred in mid-November last year. Stall owners reported seeing these rodents climbing on the beams above their stalls, and some even set up traps to catch them if necessary.

Though the problem has since subsided, this upcoming period could be utilised by the management to install better infrastructure or traps to curb the spawning of these rodents in the future.

Another point of consideration would be to clean or upgrade the kitchen exhaust ducting in the hawker stalls. Given that 2 fires have occurred in the month of March alone, with one on Queen Street and one at Bukit Merah, it is important that routine checks are performed to minimise the risk of a similar incident happening again.

However, despite this, the news has sparked confusion and exasperation amongst netizens, who claim that ABC Brickworks Market is renovating too regularly.

While it is true that this food centre is often closed temporarily every few months, it is mainly for cleaning work rather than renovation. ABC Brickworks Market’s last closing was scheduled from 15 to 16 Dec 2025, 15 to 16 Sep 2025 and 10 to 11 Mar 2025.

With all these necessary precautions, it is vital to recognise the worry that prices may increase after the food centre undergoes its refresh.

While these sentiments are valid, it is also worth noting that the current closure may be part of the government’s broader aim in bettering hygiene standards, through upgrading and sanitation efforts, ensuring that both hawkers and diners can serve and dine in a cleaner, fresher environment.
