After over 30 years of serving steaming plates of delicious hawker classics, the elderly couple behind Hougang Oyster Omelette & Fried Kway Teow are preparing to step away from the wok and possibly close. Run by Mr and Mrs Ong, the famed stall at 435A Hougang Avenue 8 was featured in our piece on Singapore’s best-rated oyster omelette after earning an impressive 4.3 stars out of 5 rating on Google Reviews.

They have also been the recipient of numerous accolades, including radio station Class 95FM’s Best Oyster Omelette award in their fan-voted Foodies’ Choice.

Regular customers are familiar with the couple’s modus operandi: Mrs Ong fries char kway teow at the back while Mr Ong takes charge of whipping up the orh luak in the front. Before diving into the hawker scene, Mr Ong once worked as a chef cooking for soldiers in an Army camp. Neither he nor his wife had formal training in making orh luak — the couple is completely self-taught and refined their signature recipe through years of on-the-job R&D.

Their signature Hougang Fried Oyster comes in 2 sizes: S$6 for Small and S$7 for Large. It features charred golden-brown clusters of egg and flour with a generous serving of plump, briny Korean oysters and a garnish of fresh coriander. The dish pairs amazingly with their tangy homemade chilli sauce.

However, after decades of physical labour behind the wok, the couple has decided it’s time to retire by the end of 2026 to rest and focus on their health. As their adult children have shown no interest in inheriting the stall, Mr and Mrs Ong are actively searching for a passionate successor to take over the reins and carry on the stall’s legacy.
For fans of their plump, juicy oysters and wok-hei rich char kway teow, the clock is ticking. Be sure to head down to Hougang Avenue 8 to show your support and grab a plate before the veteran hawkers officially hand over the wok.
