Chomp Chomp Food Centre has bid farewell to popular hawker. Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodle’s beloved founder, Ng Hock Chuan, passed away peacefully on 16 Jul at the age of 79.
The news was shared via the Hawkers United – Dabao 2020 Facebook Group on 19 Jul 2026, and long-time customers expressed their condolences and reminisced about visiting his stall since their childhood days.
Mr Ng is the son of Ng Seng, one of Singapore’s Hokkien Mee pioneers. The older Mr Ng began frying Hokkien mee at Rochor Road in the 1950s, and the younger Mr Ng started his own venture, Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles in the 1960s.
Since then, Mr Ng whipped up countless plates of Hokkien mee daily, with frequent 30-45 minute waits at his stall. His Hokkien mee also gained Michelin recognition, but he remained humble and did not display the prominent maroon sticker anywhere on his stall.
Mr Ng was known as a quiet and hardworking man to his customers.
In the Facebook post that announced his demise, an anonymous customer said, “Uncle was never loud or showy. He always had a quiet smile for his customers, then turned back to his wok with complete focus.”
At Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles, the Hokkien Mee is served in three sizes: Small (S$4), Medium (S$5), and Large (S$6), and features thin bee hoon alongside the yellow noodles. The plate of wok-hei noodles is moist and packed with flavourful stock.
Mr Ng may no longer operate the stall but he has a second generation to keep his legacy alive. Relatives, friends and customers are invited to pay their final respects to Mr Ng at Block 192 Rivervale Drive, Singapore 540192 by 22 Jul 2026.
