Die-hard fans of Ah Hui Big Prawn Noodle located at Balestier Market who have been supporting the stall, I have a piece of sad news. Due to rent issues, the hawker stall will be closing permanently on 13 Jul 2023.

The difficult decision to cease operations was made by its 2nd-gen owner, Mary (pictured below, first from left). The famous stall selling prawn noodles has been visited by many well-known personalities such as KF Seetoh (pictured below, second from left); 18 Chefs founder, Benny Se Teo; and numerous television celebrities, including Kym Ng, Gurmit Singh and Michelle Chia.

The legacy of this iconic business was first started by Tan Ah Hui back in 1963 as a simple pushcart peddling the streets of Tiong Bahru. It then shifted to the Jalan Besar Stadium vicinity back in 1986 before relocating to Longhouse Food Court at Upper Thomson in 2002.

The stall brings in wide variety of fresh prawns daily, including tiger prawns or ang kar (red feet), depending on the availability. The crustaceans are blanched on the spot a la minute as orders come in.

To have the ultimate indulgent meal, get the Big Prawn Noodle (S$12/S$15) or settle for something smaller like the Prawn Noodle (S$5.50/S$7.70). If you need your daily dose of meat, you may consider ordering the Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle (S$5.50/S$7.70).

The noodles are tossed in fragrant chilli and served with aromatic fried shallots and golden nuggets of pork lard— mmm… I’m drooling already!

Remember to also get a serving of the Golden Prawn Pancake (S$7) which is a must-try whenever you’re dining at Ah Hui Big Prawn Noodle.

I do recommend that you come and eat to your heart’s content before their last day of operations. Oh by the way, do take note— a little birdie told me that Mary will be taking leave from 18 to 23 Jun 2023.

Mary is currently on the lookout for new potential hawker stalls with reasonable rent but she hasn’t found any suitable ones just yet. Fingers crossed that she will, and soon!
