The pop-up can be found in the Atrium at Basement 1 of Tanglin Mall from 24 Aug to 29 Aug 2023, and from 30 Aug to 3 Sep 2023, you’ll find them at B For Bagel, also located at Basement 1. The wide assortment of breads are affordably priced, with most ranging from S$3.90 to S$5.90 each.

Bakery 1946 and St. Geundae Bakery are both very well-known in Korea. Bakery 1946 gained popularity for its apple-shaped buns and densely-packed fillings, while St. Geundae Bakery was named one of South Korea’s top 3 bakeries to visit by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO).

Bakery 1946’s K-Apple Bread (S$5.90), also named DaeguNeunggeumbang, is a cute apple-shaped bun made with red rice flour, cream cheese and apple jam. When you opt for a set of 6 (S$34.90), the buns will be presented within an apple box, just like the real fruit!

The bread was soft and tore apart easily, revealing the generous fillings within. The light cream cheese was the perfect pairing with the sweet apple jam and apple cubes.

Aside from the famous apple buns, Bakery 1946 also has other adorable and creative bakes shaped to resemble certain foods. The Chestnut Manju (S$3.90) looks like a giant chestnut, while the Sweet Potato Bread (S$4.50 for 1 piece, S$22.50 for a set of 5) could easily fool anyone with its realistic appearance. The Garlic Manju (S$3.90 for 1 piece, S$14.80 for a set of 4) is cutely shaped like a whole garlic, complete with individual cloves!

Each bun was super generously packed with fillings, much to my delight. The Garlic Manju is one of the most unique buns, in my opinion, being filled with sweet white bean paste combined with savoury garlic. The Sweet Potato Bread stood out compared to other bakeries as it had a chewy, mochi-like texture, as opposed to the usual fluffy bread that I expected.

Bakery 1946’s other breads include the Black Sesame Cream Cheese Bread (S$4.90), Black Sesame Peanut Crumb Bread (S$4.50) and the “Signature 1946” Whole Red Bean Bread (S$4.50). I was surprised at how hefty each bun was when I lifted them, and when I cut them open, I was greeted by the most generous amount of fillings imaginable.

For under S$5 each, these densely-packed buns are such a steal!

St. Geundae Bakery doesn’t disappoint in its offerings either. You must try their super famous Fresh Cream Red Bean Buns (S$4.50), which have been featured multiple times in Korean media. The buns are available in the flavours of Original, Matcha and Strawberry, and contain a generous amount of sweet cream and mashed red bean.

I was surprised to find bits of crunchy walnuts within the red bean, which made the buns even more earthy and nutty.

St. Geundae Bakery’s other offerings include the classic Original Daegu Sweet Red Bean Bun (S$2.90), Cheese Latte Bun (S$4.50), Peanut Crumb Red Bean Bun (S$3.70) and Peanut Crumb Mochi Bun (S$3.60). Like the breads from Bakery 1946, each bun was stuffed generously with fillings, and I especially liked the different textures from the Peanut Crumb Mochi Bun — it was soft, crumbly and chewy all at the same time.

Market Blue’s Korean bakery pop-up will take place from 11am to 8pm from 25 Aug to 29 Aug, so be sure to head down early in case they sell out. Their 30 Aug to 3 Sep pop-up’s opening hours have yet to be announced, so keep an eye on their Instagram for updates!
