10 best places to watch the FIFA World Cup 2022 for a rollin’ good time

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is finally here!

Sports is always more fun with a loud, cheering crowd. But it isn’t just about the biggest venue or the largest screens— a great crowd, cheap food and great booze make audience-ing much more fun.

With the FIFA World Cup beamed live around the world from 21 Nov to 18 Dec 2022, here are the 10 best places in Singapore to watch your favourite— and most loathed (I’m looking at you, England)— teams play.

1. Harry’s

fifa - harry's

With 19 outlets across the island, the odds are that there’s a Harry’s near you. The popular watering hole chain is the place for beer aficionados. Beer cocktails are on the menu and they even have their very own blend, Harry’s Premium Lager. Some branches are pet-friendly as well.

Harry’s has a World Cup-themed Game Time, Tiger Time promotion going that gets you 3 pints for S$33++. With Christmas coming up soon, the Festive Beer Bucket (S$49) promotion of 5 bottles of Tiger Crystal, Heineken Silver or Strongbow is also running.

Harry’s is probably going to be one of the most popular places to watch the Cup so you should make your reservations now. For a full list of matches and which branches will screen them, you can go here.

2. El Mero Mero / Señor Taco Chijmes

El Mero Mero and Senor Taco are going all out with their World Cup Football Fiesta at CHIJMES in collaboration with foodpanda. There are going to be screens offering 360-degree coverage, with the main screen measuring 10m in length.

If the excitement of the world’s premier soccer competition live wasn’t enough, they will also have live music, dance performances, international DJs, a photo booth and a “Guess the Winner’ contest. El Mero Mero’s Football Fiesta menu has beers, margaritas, burritos, nachos and more at S$15 each. Here is their regular food and drinks menu.

It’s a kid-friendly venue and will be divided into 4 Zones: VIP, Bar Tables, Lawn Standing Area and Restaurant. There is a minimum spend of S$30 for the Lawn but it can be offset by the purchase of food and drinks at the venue.

3. Café Football Singapore

Some places just had to be on this list and with a name like Café Football Singapore, it is definitely one of them. Part-owned by Manchester United greats, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville, its motto is “Love Food. Love Football.” Hey, that’s a-okay with us on both counts!

The original Café Football Singapore branch at The Arena (PUB recreation Club) is going strong but, seemingly in anticipation of the massive demand during the 2022 World Cup, they opened a new branch at Genting Hotel Jurong in late October.

Their menu is a mix of light bites and mains, as well as soft drinks, beers, and even red and white wines, many of which have cheeky football-related names. (Chicken satay is called Referee Kayu!)

4. The Penny Black

fifa - penny black

Designed and built to scale to its sister pub in England, The Penny Black was crafted there and shipped piece by piece to Singapore. It was then assembled at its current location, the first establishment in the long line of pubs, cafes and restaurants at Boat Quay.

For World Cup 2022, The Penny Black has a Taste the Action promotion running where you can get 11 bottles of beer (S$88). The Prediction Platter (S$38) inspired by fare from participating countries is a medley of tastes. From the UK, there is Mini Dory Fish, Bratwurst Sausage from Germany, Soy/Garlic Fried Chicken from Korea, and Belgium/Netherlands contribute Fries with Frites Sauce & Onions.

Guess the Top 3 Teams of the competition and The Penny Black could reward you with a return flight and a 3-night stay in the winning country!

5. Muddy Murphy’s

Very much like its sister pub The Penny Black, Muddy Murphy’s, too was built to scale in the UK and then shipped and reassembled in Singapore. With 6 large screen mounted TVs, you can get a slice of the action no matter where you sit.

They are running the same Taste the Action promotion of 11 bottles of beer (S$88) and Prediction Platter (S$38) of Mini Dory Fish, Bratwurst Sausage, Soy/Garlic Fried Chicken, and Fries with Frites Sauce & Onions. You also enter the same Guess the Top 3 Teams contest to win a return flight and 3-night stay in the winning country.

The wider menu here is as authentically modern UK pub fare as I have seen in Singapore. The Fish N Chips (S$26) comes with filleted red snapper prepared in ale while the ever-popular Chicken Tikka Masala (S$19) marinated in yoghurt and chat masala served with biriyani and papadum is the unsurprising crowd favourite.

6. ST3PS @ Changi Airport T3

Yes, ST3PS is just a dressed-up version of ‘steps’, which is exactly what this budget-friendly location is. Admission may be free but this isn’t some random, no-frills place to cheer on your favourite team— you will see every blade of grass and bead of flying sweat in ultra-high-definition on the huge 6m by 3.5m LED screen.

Screenings of the World Cup begin with the inaugural match in the early hours of 21 Nov 2022. There are around 10 places to eat and takeaway from, which makes for far more variety than most of the other places screening matches. There is also an indoor garden which you can escape to after a nail-biting finish.

You can find the exact timings of every match that will be shown here. You’ll have to hurry, though. There is only seating space for 200 and additional standing room for around 100 people.

7. Dallas Bar & Restaurant

fifa - dallas bar

Dallas Bar & Restaurant takes the contemporary bar-bistro concept to a new level with its two branches at some of the most desirable real estate in Singapore: Marina Bay Sands and Boat Quay. You can check out their live events screenings here.

The events space Boat Quay branch is especially great with its balcony overlooking the water, 3 giant flat screens and a thumping surround sound system by Bose. Capacity may be an issue, though, as it is limited to 100 people. You can make reservations for yourself or as a group here.

Contact them and find operating hours of both branches here.

8. Hero’s

2,500 square feet is a lot of space for a lot of people and a lot of excitement. Wild West-themed Hero’s bar on Circular Road features longhorn skulls, saddles and other décor that makes you want to say ‘Howdy!’ Fortunately, the live band plays newer music, limiting themselves to tunes from the 1970s onwards.

Hero’s makes the list because it’s taking a different approach to the screenings— they will have the matches on their screens but they will not have the audio on. If you want to have a good, hearty meal and watch the match, this is probably the best place to do so in relative quiet. Have a meal, have a conversation and enjoy the soccer when you want— it’s perfect!

9. The Drunken Poet

If you are looking for the classic Irish pub experience in Singapore, few places can deliver as well as The Drunken Poet. Located in the heart of the city at Orchard Road, it is one of the most happening places during live sporting events.

Open till 3am every day except Sunday, they are arguably one of the most reliable spots to catch your team’s matches. Better still, their kitchen is open till 2am on those nights, too. Carbo-load your way to more energy for more cheering!

While The Drunken Poet hasn’t announced any World Cup special deals, it has been screening sports events every day for years. With that much experience, you know that they will do a bang-up job here, too.

10. BQ Bar

Another of the very popular watering holes with grub on Boat Quay, the riverfront BQ Bar has a combination of indoor and al fresco seating. They take pride in their personalised service, and knowing all their regulars as well as many newcomers by name.

The menu isn’t bad either, with naan pizzas and party platters the favourites for sharing. Along with its chill, laidback vibe, the choices of bar-side, riverside, terrace and side alley seating mean that BQ Bar has something for everyone who wants to watch the World Cup. Cheer with the thick indoor crowd when your team’s winning but escape for some calming fresh air when it goes down to the wire.

All these reasons also explain why BQ Bar will fill up quickly, come the live telecasts. You can play it safe and make reservations here.
