The food game in Katong is pretty strong and now you have even more options for dessert. Newly-opened Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique is putting their spin on healthy ice cream with natural botanical flavours.
Their humble and inviting space is located opposite I12 Katong, right next to the famous Red House Bakery. I loved the minimalist botanical theme, which focused my attention on their flavours.
Alright, I admit it. I’m one of those ice cream people who’re afraid of change. My eyes scanned the row for chocolate. No chocolate; I began to panic slightly.
Hazelnut seemed like the obvious next best choice until I properly looked at the other flavours. Lemongrass Ginger? Spiced Pear? Botanical gelato started to make sense.
Birds of Paradise make their own gelato base and infuse it with various herbs, spices, fruits and flowers that create these natural flavours.
Popular flavours include Strawberry Basil, Pandan, and White Chrysanthemum. I surprised myself and tried them all.
Strawberry Basil was delightfully light and not as sweet as I thought it would be while Pandan would definitely satisfy anyone craving something full-bodied and local. My favourite though had to be White Chrysanthemum.
Cacao nibs are scattered throughout this creamy gelato and makes for a very refreshing dessert that for a moment made me forget all about chocolate. You will be more than satisfied with the options on display and the owner is constantly thinking up new creations.
I mean I haven’t even mentioned Mango Sorbet, Pistachio, Basil and Lychee Raspberry.
Get a Single Scoop at S$4.70 and a Double at S$7.70 in more guilt-free ways than one – their cups are made from sugarcane pulp which is good news for the environment!
If you’re more of a cone person, you HAVE to try their freshly-made Thyme-Infused Cones (S$1). Why thyme? The owner said they tried it and just knew it was a winner. IT IS.
The very concept of Birds of Paradise’s gelato means you won’t be left feeling jelak, which also means you’re more likely to want more. Pints are available to go at S$16 and Party Cups can be arranged for gatherings, parties and events.
Katong has given us another reason to love the East and another reason to eat more ice cream. Plus, just look at that Instagram-worthy wall.
