In the latest of a string of closures for the beleaguered chain, Cathay Cinema at West Mall will close on 20 Feb. Just 8 months ago, it shut another of its outlets at Ang Mo Kio.

Why is the Cathay Cinema at West Mall closing?
The closure at West Mall is due to the expiry of its lease, operator mm2 Asia said in a press release on 17 Feb. It added that this was mutually agreed on by the firm and the landlord.
The Cathay outlet at West Mall had 6 halls and was previously operated by WE Cinemas (formerly Eng Wah Cinemas). Cathay Cineplexes took over from WE Cinemas in Feb 2013.
The Cathay cinema at West Mall will undergo reinstatement works after closing on 20 Feb.

In a Facebook post on 17 Feb, Cathay thanked movie-goers for the “good times” they have had together. The chain asked customers to visit their nearest outlets at Jem and Clementi.
After this latest closure, Cathay still operates 5 other cinemas in Singapore. They are located at Causeway Point in Woodlands, Downtown East in Pasir Ris, Jem in Jurong East, Century Square in Tampines and Clementi 321 in Clementi.
Clementi 321 began operating after Cathay bought over the WE Cinemas outlet at Clementi in Oct 2024.
Yet in February this year, The Straits Times reported that Cathay had received letters of demand from landlords of two of its branches for rent, legal fees and other monies owed.
In another sign that it is facing financial woes, Cathay launched a “Save Our Screen” campaign on 14 Feb.

Priced at $100, it comes with 10 vouchers that will each allow the holder to redeem 1 movie ticket, 1 tub of popcorn and 1 bottle of water at any Cathay Cineplex.
Redeem the vouchers from Feb 21. They are valid on any day, including the eve of public holidays and public holidays.
