Our hawker food scene is seriously on a roll, with the ever-so-often emergence of stalls on the MICHELIN Guide. Here’s the newest kid on the block – the humble Hup Kee Teochew Fishball Noodles located in Mei Ling Market and Food Centre was awarded the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand in 2023

Perhaps the name Hup Kee rings a bell to many of you, having previously resided in Margaret Drive Food Centre which was demolished in 2011. It’s one of two fishball noodle stalls in the food centre, both with their fair share of devotees.

The stall has a simple menu composed of 4 basic offerings, all starring their signature Teochew Fishballs and Meatballs in different combinations. As most people do, you can opt to enjoy these fishballs and meatballs with the noodles of your choice mee pok, mee kia, yellow noodles and kway teow.

The crowd favourite option would be the Teochew Fishball Meatball Mee with mee pok – perfect for those who can’t quite decide between the two, or simply want to have the best of both worlds. These bowls are priced at S$4.50, $5.50 and $6.50 for the Small, Medium and Large sizes respectively.

The springy egg noodles are cooked al dente and then tossed in their masterfully-concocted savoury sauce, balanced out with a touch of sweetness. Don’t hesitate to ask for a dollop of chilli for a spicy kick, if that’s what you fancy.

A plentiful bowl of their fishballs, meatballs, fried fish cakes and her giao (Teochew fish dumplings) is served on the side, and these tasty morsels pair well with the noodles.

Not to worry if you prefer your noodles in a broth as all menu offerings have soup variations as well! Slurp up your noodles whilst savouring the soul-warming fishball soup with a bowl of Teochew Fishball Mee Soup – it’s the epitome of comfort food.

I’d say indulgence can be as simple as a bowl of noodles, and Hup Kee is where it’s at.
