In my experience, it’s a lot easier to choose a smartwatch for yourself than for a kid. Kids’ smartwatches usually fall into one of two categories: feature-packed but clunky, or kid-friendly but lacking features. The imoo Watch Phone X10 manages to find that elusive middle ground — fun and functional for kids, while giving parents genuine peace of mind.

After a week of real-world use at the hands of an 8-year-old who has been using the imoo Z6, here’s what we think of the upcoming imoo Watch Phone X10.

Design and Comfort

Looks-wise, the imoo Watch Phone X10 is similar to the imoo Z6 — it retains the rugged profile of its predecessor but is noticeably slimmer. In practical parent terms, that means it’s easier to get your kids’ hands through long-sleeve tops. This new sleeker outline will probably also mean fewer bumps and scratches (but never zero because kids always find a way).

The underside of the watch and the strap are virtually identical to both models, and they are both comfortable. We found the texture of the new strap even softer; it was easy to wear both over the whole day and overnight.

One of the most innovative features of the imoo range of kids’ smartwatches has always been the 90-degree flip-up screen. Raising it reveals the 8MP rear camera which works along the 5MP front camera for video calls.

However, imoo have taken it a step further with the Watch Phone X10. Now, the raised watch face can be rotated 360 degrees and even completely detached! This makes it especially useful for taking pictures of hard-to-reach places.

Ease of Use

I have always found imoo’s interface easy to navigate, and so do the kids. The touchscreen and OS of the imoo Watch Phone X10 are bright, responsive and silky smooth. Icons are big and intuitive, making it a gentle learning curve both for younger kids and older adults.

Communication

For most parents, the most important reason to buy their kids a smartwatch is so that they can contact each other. With the imoo Watch Phone X10, you and your child can choose between voice calling, video calls and messaging.

Naturally, you will need to install a SIM card to use some features. With imoo’s global network coverage, going on holiday doesn’t mean being out of touch with your kid.

We tested the call features at home, around the neighbourhood, in malls, on the MRT and as we wandered about in the park. Calls were as clear as you would expect with a smartphone.

Safety

After communication, safety is likely the main reason for buying your kid a smartwatch. The imoo Watch Phone X10 has real-time location tracking alongside route history. Precise GPS data tells you whether your child is in a building and even on which floor.

A “status” indicator reveals whether the imoo Watch Phone X10 smartwatch is currently on your child’s wrist. This feature can be useful for parents who fear their child may be wandering about without revealing their location.

When they are on a call with you, you can remotely switch to the smartwatch’s rear camera to see both what’s in front of and behind them. There is also geofencing and an SOS function for every parent’s peace of mind.

Another compelling feature is the “Bump and Add Friends” option. Kids simply bump their watches together to connect. This way, only those they know personally can contact them via the watch. This creates a closed, safe social circle.

Health & Wellness

Just like an adult smartwatch, the imoo Watch Phone X10 monitors heart rate. However, it ups the game with constant temperature tracking, a feature that many adult devices lack. This is perfect for parents who want to know early if their child is running a fever.

There is also a mood tracker, a feature that uses a range of physical factors to assess your child’s mental wellness. It’s a useful guide to understanding when he or she needs a kind word and a cuddle.

Activity tracking logs steps, distance and intensity, as well as 10 different sports activities.

Parents have control over screen time and every app installed. Sleep Mode and Class mode ensure there are no distractions when you don’t want there to be.

Durability and Water Resistance

Active kids usually love the water. With the imoo Watch Phone X10’s 20-metre depth rating, your little ones can go for swim lessons, enjoy the waterpark and even frolic in the rain.

This watch is decidedly rugged. The imoo Z6 is a beast and has kept on ticking till today despite being the victim of 2 very active and adventurous little boys. If anything, the imoo Watch Phone X10 looks even more rugged.

Verdict
