If I had to describe my parents’ generation with one word, I guess it would be creative. Well, that’s the nice way of putting it. I mean, it takes quite a lot of creativity to come up with these preposterous ideas that I’m about to share with you.
Some of these are probably going to sound very familiar, some of you might even grimace as a bad memory of being force-fed vomit-inducing concoctions while you read this. Or perhaps, for the adventurous enough, this might prove useful for you.
Whatever the case, I hope this list of 9 home remedies that sound borderline insane but apparently work will entertain you one way or another!
1. Rubbing A Vinegar-Boiled Egg All Over Your Body Will Bring Down Your Fever

I’d heard about this from one of my — how should I put it — more peculiar friends. Try not to laugh while you picture what I am about to describe to you.
So if you have a fever, apparently all you need to do is boil an egg with vinegar and water, then, rub it all over your body. I don’t know what sort of science, or rather, witchery this is, but my friend swears by this remedy.
I mean, I’ve never been inclined to rub a hard-boiled egg all over my body, nor do I think I would have the energy to do that if I’m suffering from a fever, but no harm trying.
Also, it’s definitely cheaper to do this than pop some panadol pills in your mouth. Maybe you can try it and tell me if it works.
2. Durian Shell Water & Its Preventive Properties
You know how the Chinese believe that some foods are ‘heaty’, while others are ‘cooling’? The well-loved, but also equally hated durian is one of the foods that are classified as ‘heaty’. Basically, the belief is that if you eat too much durian, your body will become overly ‘heaty’ and run the risk of succumbing to a sore throat, cough and the like.
But fret not, here’s something you can do to avoid that, and still be able to eat as much durian as you’d like. So once you’re done with your durian feasting, you fill the empty durian shell with salt water, then bottoms up. I know, it sounds highly off-putting, but it’s supposed to work.
3. A Coke A Day Keeps Your Cough At Bay

Okay, so far, I think this one sounds the most credible. It’s apparently widely-practised in a number of Asian countries.
If you’re coughing like an old hag, you can boil coke with ginger and lemon, then drink it. It’s supposed to cure you. Well, there might be some truth to this, since coke has long been touted as a cough medicine. But also a toilet cleaner. So you decide for yourself whether you should do this.
I guess I’m not opposed to the idea of drinking coke by itself, but there’s no way you’re ever going to see me drink ginger and lemon-infused warm coke. Just no.
4. Having Allergies? Here’s Some Coke.

No, not cocaine. It’s the drink Coca-Cola. Yes, the same drink that can somehow both cause and cure a cough.
According to a friend who’s plagued with a long, pitiable list of allergies, coke is her best friend in her time of need. Each time she experiences an allergic reaction, she drinks a little coke to make it go away. And she’s not the only one who does this, she says she knows a couple of people who do it too.
The idea behind this is that coke contains a multitude of chemicals, and some of these chemicals are the right ones to combat allergies.
5. Bumps & Bruises? Use An Egg With A Silver Coin.

I never knew hard-boiled eggs had so many miraculous properties. Like, just what is it about hard-boiled eggs that make people want to rub them over their bodies so often?
This is called Hong Ahn (Egg Rub Remedy), and it entails boiling an egg, then cutting it open and replacing the yolk with a silver coin. After which, you’re supposed to wrap the egg in a cloth, and rub it over wherever you’re hurt.
The most interesting part about this remedy, however, is that the colour of the coin will change depending on what’s wrong with you. As the coin is supposed to ‘suck out’ all the negative energy within you, the colour changes accordingly. If you’re, say, too ‘cool’, then the coin will turn black or blue.
6. Boiled Milk & Cinnamon Powder For Your Sore Throat
I’m sorry, this just sounds plain disgusting. But here it is anyway, if you are ever desperate enough to try it out.

If you’re suffering from a sore throat, you can boil some milk, and add a little bit of cinnamon powder to the milk and drink it. It’s probably going to hurt as you swallow, and I’m not very sure what the cinnamon powder is supposed to do.
But people have tried it and they say it works, so I guess if you really want to stop sounding like an old hag, no harm trying!
7. Marshmallows To Soothe Your Sore Throat
Honestly, this just sounds like someone wanted an excuse to eat marshmallows while they had a sore throat.

Yet, there’s some scientific truth to it. Apparently, the gelatin in the marshmallow can help to soothe irritation. I don’t know about you, but I’d definitely prefer eating marshmallows to drinking Luo Han Guo or some other awful herbal tea.
So the next time you have a sore throat, pop a few marshmallows in your mouth and watch the magic happen…I guess.
8. Black Chicken Herbal Soup Replenishes The Blood You Lose During Your Period

This one doesn’t sound too insane, and might actually be helpful to you. Perhaps you’re the kind to feel weak and experience a fatigue during your period, so this could be a solution to your period woes.
Black chicken herbal soup is said to have many health benefits. Some of them include improving blood circulation and energy levels, and of course, restoring the blood you’ve lost during your period.

9. Eat Some Raw Garlic To Fart Out Your Bloatedness

We all know how uncomfortable being bloated can feel. It’s like your stomach is full of gas, and you want to fart so badly, but you just can’t.
There’s a solution, but only if you’re willing to endure the sting of raw garlic, and having garlic-breath all day long. If you’re truly in need of some good, healthy farts, eat raw garlic, and I assure you you’ll be a quickly deflating balloon in no time.
Try it, but risk having no one to talk to for the entire day.
