7-Eleven continues to live up to its name of being a store and more. One of the latest additions is Lan Fong Yuen (蘭芳園) Milk Tea (S$2.80). For the uninitiated, you’ll know that Lan Fong Yuen is a famous cha chaan teng in Hong Kong.
The packaging couldn’t be prettier, a stylish black cup and with copper accents. This one will make it on the ‘gram alright.
Nothing screams cha chaan teng more than traditional silk stocking tea. You can imagine how elated I was when I heard I could have a little piece of Hong Kong with me.
Hong Kong-style milk tea has its roots in the colonial era. Instead of having their tea with milk like the British, the Cantonese adapted it and added condensed or evaporated milk instead. Quite different from the Taiwanese milk teas we are used to too.
Coupled with the many rounds of silk straining, what you get is a smooth and rich Hong Kong-style milk tea.
When you take the first sip, there might not be any obvious difference. The aftertaste is where it hits you, much stronger than regular milk tea with an astringent taste towards the end.
Definitely more heavy-handed than your average Taiwanese milk tea.
Sipping on Lan Fong Yuen (蘭芳園) Milk Tea took me back to the hustle and bustle of a Hong Kong cha chaan teng. If you feel the insistent pangs of wanderlust, this Lan Fong Yuen Milk Tea will satisfy your itch to travel.
